Countdown to 2018: Favorite Video Games Released in 2017!

Power up Players for Countdown week on GamersUnitedGG! We are nearing the end of the year and have experienced another fantastic year of video games, movies and interests. Before we catalogue this year in our memories, we will be counting down the top moments of the year! To start off the week of countdowns, we’re going to start with the premise of the blog, video games! We have been asking around and will list our top video games of 2017 in descending order from number 5 to our favorite game of the year!

#5 Call of Duty World War II – cod

Call of Duty World War II comes at the bottom of the list for me. While I am happy to finally have played a COD game after a few years hiatus, WWII wasn’t as grand as I thought it would be. I believe it is because I wasn’t really a fan of World at War and WWII is supposed to be a sort of sequel to that game. The old school style guns and maps are just not appealing to me, but the game is still fun so it made my list!

#4 Golf It – Golf-It-Free-Download

Golf It is a mini golf game (similar to Golf With Friends) where you will play as the golf ball! I like this game because you can change the appearance of your golf ball like adding on hats or changing the color. This game is an adventure, sandbox type game where the community can create maps for you to download. Golf it is super fun and I’ve been playing a few times a week with my friends (this will be a game featured on the YouTube channel next year).

#3 Destiny 2 – destiny3

D2 is my first experience with Destiny as I did not play the original Destiny game. I just didn’t find it appealing, but after being worn down by my friends, I picked up Destiny 2 about a week after it’s release. You can review my First Impressions post by clicking here! I really enjoyed D2 and the variety of game modes gave it a better rating in my opinion.

#2 Final Fantasy XIV Online – final

I have just recently purchased Final Fantasy XIV Online (First Impressions Post coming soon). FFXIV is a MMORPG game where you are battling bosses, fulfilling quests and leveling your characters to become a great savior! Sooo pretty much another RPG game. What I love about FF so far is that it offers soooo many missions and character classes that you can play. I am playing as an Arcanist but I think I will upgrade to a Summoner soon. This is my first experience with a Final Fantasy game and I am enjoying the ride so far. Plus Chocobos!!!!!!

#1 Halo Wars 2 – halo-wars-banner

My number 1 game for 2017 has to be Halo Wars 2 hands down! I was super excited when I found out that HW2 was being released on the Xbox One, so much so that I traded in my original Xbox One and bought the Halo Wars 2 Xbox One S bundle! Best purchase of my life! The new Xbox runs smoother, is white (which I wanted instead of the standard black one), is slimmer and just beautiful! You can read my review of Halo Wars 2 by clicking here! I really enjoyed the strategy game and I still play it to this day (it was released in February). If you have played HW2, I also wrote a First Impressions and Tips post!

Those are my top games played that were released in 2017. Let’s hear from some of our blogging buddies:

Drakulus- Top 5 games of 2017 are  Divinity: Original Sin 2, Wolfeinstein 2, Mass Effect: Andromeda, The Elder Scrolls Legends, and For Honor. Read the review on why and the top 10 games that made the list by clicking here!

Lightning Ellen – Top 5 games didn’t really make her list because she didn’t play 5 games in 2017 lol! She did give her insight on her top 2 games which are Hellblade and Horizon Zero Dawn!

Hundstrasse – Luke from Hundstrasse posted on his top 5 games of 2017 which included 7 Days to Die, Owlboy, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Strafe and Fortnite! Read his reasons for selecting each game and their placings by clicking here!

The Well Red Mage – Our buddy and fellow blogger at WRM selected:

#1. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
#2. Super Mario Odyssey
#3. Shovel Knight Treasure Trove
#4. The Disney Afternoon Collection
#5. SteamWorld Dig 2

Sonic Mania Video Game

Happy Wednesday Novas! Today’s post will be focusing on a video game that I have just learned will be releasing this year; Sonic Mania! Sonic was one of the iconic games of my childhood so when I was rummaging through the PlayStation store (because my Xbox One just got fried by a storm :((((( ) the new Sonic game immediately caught my attention.

Sonic Mania is a 2D video game that allows you to play with Sonic, Tails or Knuckles as you take on stages and battle against Dr. Eggman. The levels are re-imagined, classic levels like a newer version of Green Hill Zone, Casino Night or the Chemical Plant stage. This reboot of a classic also brings with it the new Drop Dash move! From what I can see, it looks like you are able to drop down (while in ball form) and quickly dash in the direction of your choice. This is a great add on because it’s all performed in one single motion. No more losing coins because you didn’t properly jump on the enemy. Look at the comparisons between the original Casino Night Stage and the new Casino Stage below!

I love a classic Sonic game, but my favorite will forever be Sonic Adventure 2 Battle. The introduction of Shadow and the Chao Gardens are a formula that was unmatched in the franchise’s history. Some questions I have are how many levels will be included in the game? Are you able to switch between the 3 main characters at any time?

Sonic Mania looks to be really fun and I’m always up for some nostalgia.  I have listed below my top reasons that I would want to “Play” or “Skip” Sonic Mania.

  • Classic 2D Game play
  • Very reasonable price $19.99
  • Upgraded features (60 FPS, Drop Dash Ability)

  • Not a Fan of Sonic Games

Check out the trailer for the game below!

Have you heard of the new Sonic Mania game? Are you a Sonic fan? Do you think you will want to purchase this game? Let’s talk Sonic!

30 Day Video Game Challenge: Day 15!

Happy Thursday! I hope your week is going well! I’m getting extremely excited for the Money In the Bank Pay Per View this weekend! I’ll have a preview and predictions post up on Saturday about my thoughts on the event! Anyway, today’s day number 15 in the daily writing challenge that focuses on Gamers! Let’s see what today’s topic is.

Day 15 – Post a screenshot from the game you’re playing right now.

Currently, I’m playing Gears of War 4 (Shockerrrrr lol). I’ve decided to post a short clip instead of a screenshot lol. I was playing king of the hill with color blast kait!

Which games are you currently playing? Let’s talk video games!

Xbox Game Pass Thoughts!

Happy Monday Novas! I hope your weekend was spectacular! I wanted to post a quick blog about the new Xbox Game Pass Subscription Service that has launched for Xbox One. Shout out to Falcon Game Reviews for blogging about it, because as soon as I read it, I signed up lol. Sure enough I turned on my Xbox One and the trial was there for me to try out. So of course I did! Since I’ve previously been subscribed to PlayStation Now and Gamefly, I figured I could try out Xbox’s Version of paying to play!

What is it? The Game Pass Subscription is a service similar to PlayStation Now and Game-fly where you pretty much are able to download select games and play them at your leisure! Since the service is fairly new, the selection is limited but they are planning to update and cycle games continuously. You will also receive a discount on purchasing games to have permanently in your library. With the Game Pass service, you can quickly download and play games for as long as you have a valid subscription. Sounds easy enough, right?

My Experience: I was really happy to try out the new service. I immediately downloaded Saints Row IV, The Unwritten Tales 2, Halo 5 and Lego Batman . I haven’t played Saints Row IV before, but I am a fan of the series and The Unwritten Tales 2 game was interesting in it’s premise. I’ve never played a “Lego” game and wanted to try that out and I have yet to play Halo 5. I was happy with the speed in which the games downloaded and I started out with the Unwritten Tales 2!

Saints Row IV was amazing and everything that I thought it would be. I’m a little annoyed with myself because I was only able to play 2 days of my 14 day trial (my life has gotten soooo busy lately) which means I wasn’t able to play Lego Batman or Halo 5 as of yet. I want to actually talk more about The Unwritten Tales 2. I have never heard of this game but it looked fun from the appearance. The game aesthetics reminded me of Fable (you know how much I love Fable lol) so the game caught my attention immediately. Upon reading the games description…

“A fantasy story with over 20 hours of pointing and clicking The trademark BoUT-humor, lovingly spoofing LotR, Game of Thrones, Harry Potter, Discworld, The Hobbit, WoW and more Hundreds of weird, yet oddly logical puzzles…”

Yup, that description pulled me in 100%! The game is a point and click game which is fine, what I love is that you pretty much get to choose from the responses listed below. You also have to use clues presented to figure out what to do next. image   It’s not just spelled out for you. I highly recommend The Unwritten Tales 2 and it was a great find with the Game-pass program for me. I really enjoyed it so I will be continuing the subscription service for now.

I’ve decided to list my top reasons to Play or Skip the Xbox Game Pass Service based on my personal experience.

What Next?- I have committed to at least a month of the Xbox Game Pass subscription. I will be downloading and trying Payday 2, Farming Simulator and this Hexic puzzle game for sure. My downfall is I want to play so many games that I know I won’t have much time for (it’s what corporate America wants lol). You know what that means right? I’ll probably continue the service for more than a month bwahahahaha. Touche Microsoft… you’ve got me lol!

  • Easily access your gaming Library
  • Download multiple games that interest you
  • Try out games that you have never heard of with no commitment
  • Quick Start up of games
  • Different game genre’s from RPG’s to Indie games

  • You want to play specific games. Many of the games are plat-formers and games from Xbox 360.
  • You want more than about a 50 game selection (it actually may be less) at this time.
  • You do not find any games that you are interested in playing during your 14 day trial
  • $14.99 a month is out of your budget

Those are my thoughts on the Xbox Game Pass Subscription service. I really think it’s a great investment for me, however, we all know gamers come in all forms. I personally like being about to try out new games (plus there’s plenty of puzzle games for me to play). I also like finding hidden gems  I’ve never heard of and playing through the story. I hope you will give at least the trial a try. Have you ever purchased a gaming subscription before? Let’s talk Video Games!

30 Day Video Game Challenge: Day 11!

Happy Sunday Night Novas! The post is coming late today because I wasn’t able to write it earlier. Hey, better late than never am I right? For those of you who are new to the blog, at the beginning of June we joined in with other bloggers on the 30 day blog challenge. Basically, we are responding to questions and blogging about them every day for 30 days! Feel free to comment or join us on this excursion. Let’s see what today’s topic is…

Day 11 – Gaming system of choice.

Great topic! There’s different gaming systems and platforms for gamers to use to play their favorite games. This answer won’t be much of a surprise to Novas that have been following for a while. I’ve decided to answer this question in 2 parts: My favorite current console and my all time favorite console. My favorite gaming system currently is the Xbox One. I prefer the Xbox One console to the PS4 or to PC for many reasons.

  • I love the controller
  • I love that I can hook my cable box up and watch tv as I play
  • I love Microsoft
  • Xbox has my favorite game… Gears of War 4

The second part of my answer to today’s question will be my overall favorite console of all time. It’s going to have to be the Nintendo 64. I’ve already paid my respects to this gaming system in one of the Throwback posts.Click Here to read it! Pretty much the Nintendo 64 provided me with awesome memories as a kid. Mario Kart, Super Mario 64, Wave Race, Diddy Kong Racing, Pokemon Snap, Mario Party, etc.

Plenty of awesome memories that I will not forget and the 64 is the reason why.

Those are my 2 answers for favorite video game system, what are yours? Do you agree with my choices? Let’s talk gaming consoles!

Halo Wars 2 Review!

Hiya Gamers, Geeks and Friends! This will be my first Video Game Review and I’m super excited that it will focus on none other than the new RTS Halo Wars 2! Halo Wars 2 is the Real Time Strategy game from the original release of Halo Wars back on February 26th, 2009. I’ve been anticipating the release of HW2 and when it released February 21st, 2017, I had to jump on getting it (well the Halo Wars 2 Xbox One S bundle J ).  This review will focus on the campaign, different game modes and my personal preferences. For any tips and tricks for HW2 check here for my tips post!

New Leader Available!

The addition of Leaders to Halo Wars was a good call in my opinion. Leaders add an additional element to the game by allowing the player to use Leader Powers. Leader Powers are advantages in the game specific to that Leader that can be use to give you the upper hand in battle, in other words, it can change the dynamic completely! Also the Leader chosen at the start of the game will affect whether you are playing as the UNSC or the Banished! Some examples of clutch Leader Powers that I have used are the Turret Drops, Heals and Missile Bombardments to assist me in battle. Not all of the Leader Powers are offensive, some are great strategy wise such as Professor Anders Leader Power in which Research and construction is sped up.

The Campaign: Halo Wars 2 takes place after Halo 4 **Spoiler Alert, Spoiler Alert , Look Away now!”* well it’s not really a spoiler but you never know. Anyway the campaign takes place after the fall of the Covenant when a new threat rises. Atriox and his league of followers known as the “Banished” are tired of taking orders for the remaining members of the Covenant. One day when Atriox is cornered by the Covenant, he decides to take charge and lead his Banished army against anyone who tries oppose his will.

The Gameplay in the Campaign was really good in my opinion. If you’re read some of my gaming posts before, you will already know that I rarely play Campaigns (unless it’s specifically a single player game) so the fact that I was intrigued and excited the whole way through Halo Wars 2 is an achievement all on its own. Through the Campaign (which I’ve played Co-op) you take the fundamentals of building a base and journey through the story. This version of my Play and Skip bullet points will detail features that I think makes the game awesome and things that can be annoying with Halo Wars 2.

Play Campaign:

  • Co-Op feature makes it a great game to play with friends online (Each player is delegated certain units and options to control)
  • The Story is actually pretty good!
  • You will learn new skills not taught in tutorials like the Spartan Slam or Lock-down Mode on the Kodiak Tanks
  • You can develop new strategies for playing multiplayer online or Skirmishes

  • Loading Times in between Missions are pretty long (A.I. Talk A Lotttt!)
  • No place to save in the current mission (If you fail you start over)
  • Missions can last 20 minutes to an hour depending on how fast you can develop your base.
  • Sometimes the game would freeze in the middle of a battle
  • There’s a lot of information and controls to learn

Other Game Modes:

Skirmish– The Skirmish will be where you can practice using different Leaders against other opponents or the AI bots. You can upgrade your skills and learn new strategies for all game modes like Domination, Team Deathmatch or Strongholds!

Blitz- Blitz is the new game mode introduced into the Halo Wars series. You are able to draw cards and from the cards you are holding, you can attack and hold strongholds. I was playing domination in where you have to be the first to 200. This new game mode allows the players to speed up what could be a long game by allowing them access only to resources in their hands. When you are playing HW2, along the way you will receive Blitz Packs from completing missions and achievements in the game. These packs will allow you to customize a deck suitable to your play style. So far I have about 25 Packs that I need to open. Each game mode you play may have daily or weekly challenges to complete in order to ear rewards!

Multiplayer: Multiplayer in any game for me is a great way to test your skills against other people around the world. Yes it’s fun playing against AI but let’s be honest, the bots will not think like another player and eventually you will learn the AI’s tactics. Playing online multiplayer is the best way to truly test your skills and how you would compare. There are so many multiplayer game modes here that to go into detail with all of them would be insane! Just know that the multiplayer element is awesome and there’s many game types to choose from including Domination, Firefight, Team Deathmatch and Blitz!

Aesthetics & Controls:

I’ve loved the feeling of the maps in HW2. You are able to select large to medium maps for team battles or smaller maps for 1 on 1 encounters. Each map has it’s on distinction of colors in reference to where the location is on the campaign. I love that all of the colors and themes are still relevant to the Halo universe. The controls are easy to use, however, the difficulty comes in trying to remember which key does what ( If you’re used to playing RTS games then you will know about control management lol).

One critique that I will have is that sometimes I want to delegate specific units to attack a target and another set of units to defend. What would make the game better for me  is if there was a way to select multiple units of different subsets. For instance, I would want to select quickly 3 Marine Units and 2 Hellbringers…. while you are able to quickly select local grouped units and all on the individual marines, you cannot mix them quickly to issue orders (unless I’ve missed something lol). Basically I want to click, click , click and move the units of my choice without having to select all units or units in the local area.

In conclusion I really love playing Halo Wars 2 and even though I have finished the Campaign, the game has great replay value with the difficulty setting, different Leaders that you are able to use, several different game modes to play and the addition of DLC that will keep me occupied for a while. It doesn’t hurt that my games average 15-20 minutes so I’m not sitting there twiddling my thumbs. Thank you for reading my first Video Game Review! What do you think of the game? Have you played Halo Wars 2 or the original Halo Wars? What’s your favorite Real Time Strategy game? Let’s Talk RTS!

Halo Wars 2 First Impression & Tips!

Hiya Gamers, Geeks and Friends! I have not finished my Netflix Series so I will not have a Netflix Series of the Week Review until next Friday. In lieu of this I have decided to give you some tips for the new Halo Wars 2 video game for Xbox One or Windows 10! Halo Wars 2 is a Real Time Strategy game that was released February 22nd, 2017. I have bought the Xbox One S bundle with the new game and decided to share a few tips and tricks to get started! After I complete the campaign I will do a full review on the game. The first thing I did was complete the Basic and Advanced Tutorials, yet there are elements of the game not covered. I’ve researched and played through a few skirmishes to come up with some tips for starting out! Let’s jump into the basics!

Symbols – imageedit_5_2322949673

  • Lightning = Power
  • Single Person = Population
  • Crates =Supplies

One issue that I ran across was the Population Symbol. I haven’t played the original Halo Wars in a bit and even after completing all of the tutorials, I couldn’t build my vehicles because my population was too low. You upgrade population via the “Armory” research building (War Council for Aliens race). There will be a population symbol that you can click to upgrade your population. You can have unlimited supplies and power however the population or number of units cap is 120 after all upgrades are established. Each infantry unity, vehicle or specialized units such as Spartans or drones will display a chart informing you on exactly how many population slots 1 unit takes.

Moving Units- If you recall a recent post I’ve written about Tutorials, you will know that I don’t really like to play them. Halo Wars 2 is an exception to that rule! Because there are a lot of controls and strategy that goes into the game I highly recommend completing all 3 tutorials to get the best experience out of moving your units (The Blitz Tutorial will only apply to that game mode). You are able to select all units in a single area by clicking the right bumper (RB). You can select all units of a specific category by double clicking A on the desired unit. Simply move your cursor to the spot in which you want to move your units and click X (Btw my controls are for Xbox One, PC controls may differ).

Leader Powers- I love that the leader integration of Leader Powers can affect your gameplay. At the beginning of a game, you are able to select your desired leader (Pay Attention ad each leader has a different skill set). Off the back I chose Professor Anders because she receives a bonus to research and construction (huge plus for my type of gameplay). There are some universal Leader Powers such as healing that allows you to heal your unites while in battle or just standing there. If you think you’re about to lose because your health is low on your active unites, use that Leader Power and shock your enemies (I did lol). Take care as Leader Powers will have a cool down.

Garrison units- Throughout the map that you are on there will be small Garrisons in which you can have a unit camp and watch for enemies. I use the Garrison checkpoints to have an eye on the map and choke points around my bases. Your unites can also attack from these locations so make sure to have long range units (general marines will do the trick).

Upgrades- Don’t forget halowars about the upgrades to not only your bases, but to your units as well. You can upgrade, health, damage, armor and even add a rocket launcher to some ground units. You can upgrade turrets and units as well.Upgrades to individual units, vehicles or the base will be marked with an upwards facing arrow. The description of each upgrade type will be located to the right of the screen as you hover over the options.

Minimap- The Minimap will be your best friend in Halo Wars 2. Due to the amount of units, bases, choke points, supplies, and don’t forget your enemies, this RTS game has a lot to keep up with. Your minimap will show you if enemy units are spotted or attacking. You can also see where your bases are, units are stationed and how many “Undiscovered Bases’ there are on the map. The benefit of knowing which bases are undiscovered is that you can track your enemies movements and defeat them quickly.

Those are my first impressions and tips for Halo Wars 2. I relay enjoy RTS games so I have been playing all night. Have you played Halo Wars or Halo Wars 2? What are your favorite RTS games? Hopefully these tips help you out and let me know if I have missed anything!

Have a great weekend!

-Luna 🙂
