Countdown to 2018: Favorite Series of 2017!

Happy Friday Novas! Today is day 3 on the Countdown to 2018 posts! We started with Video games, added our favorite WWE Events and now we are ranking the top Shows or Series that we have watched (and reviewed) in 2017! As with all rankings posts, the order will be descending from my 5th favorite show this year unto my number 1 favorite show watched this year! Tomorrow we are diving into our favorite movies released in 2017!

#5 Medici: Masters of Florence medici

Medici: Masters of Florence was one of the first series that I have reviewed on the blog. It was recommended to me on Netflix because of the genre of shows that I like to watch (Medieval Time Period). I was interested in this show specifically because of another show that I have been watching called Reign, where the queen’s name was Catherine De Medici. I wanted to see the story of her family and how they ran the city of Florence as though they were monarchs. You can read my review of the series by clicking here!

#4 Riverdale –
riverdale

Riverdale is one of the surprise series that I have watched this year. I still remember seeing the commercial and saying, ehh that looks interesting but not interesting enough for me to watch. One day Emily and I were bored at her  house and we both saw the show on Netflix. Almost simultaneously we looked at each other and said that we kind of wanted to watch it. That was all -she wrote! We binged watched Riverdale in a week ahaha. I didn’t read the Archie comics so this was new terrain for me. Similar to how the Power Rangers Movie this year had a darker twist, Riverdale brought out some crazy secrets. You can read the Review of Riverdale by clicking here!

#3 The White Princess –

twp

Here we are, back to a period piece drama and this time we are hopping aboard the start of the Tudor Dynasty in England. The white Princess is a Starz mini Series that talks about Lizzie the wife of Henry VII and her troubles as a queen of the enemy who overthrew her family, the Plantagenants. Lizzie is a princess and daughter of Edward IV. She is of the House of York and Henry Tudor was fighting on behalf of the House of Lancaster. The marriage  of these two joined Lancaster and York and created the combined white and red rose as the sigil of the House of Tudor. This series only has about 8 episodes that are an hour long, but it’s well worth it in my opinion. Checkout the spoiler free series review by clicking here!

#2 Reign

reign

Reign is one of the shows that started my obsession with the Medieval Royalty shows and documentaries. Reign is a dramatized story of Mary Queen of Scots and her fight to keep her country and her head. Mary is the granddaughter of Henry VIII and has a claim to the English Throne. Because Mary is the Queen of Scotland if she marries the Dauphin (prince) of France, she will have support from a nation of England that does not value a woman to rule alone. This puts a mark on Mary’s life and we get to watch the scenes unfold in the series. Reign has about 22 hour long episodes per season and 3 seasons so it’s a bit of a longer series. Emily doesn’t like time period dramas and she’s hooked! Definitely give it a try! You can read my Hidden Treasures Review of Reign here!

#1 Game of Thrones

got

Coming in at number 1 will be Game of Thrones! Friends have recommended Game of Thrones to me for years and with my recent fascination with medieval kings and queens, I finally gave in and started watching GOT in January. Best decision of my life! I have to admit that the first few episodes didn’t sit well with me and I couldn’t see the appeal of the show, but after season 1 everything started to meld together. I am obsessed with GOT now and I can’t wait for the final season (which I hear won’t be until 2019 :((((). Game of Thrones is the adaptation of A Song of Fire and Ice. I am planning to read the books at some point, maybe that will get me through 2018. I’m sooo obsessed that I have a Game of Thrones page! Thank you for joining us for today’s countdown! What are some of your favorite shows watched this year? Which shows are you currently binge watching on Netflix (or any other source)? Are you looking forward to any shows in 2018? Let’s talk favorite shows!

Daily Prompt: Recreate (Poem)

The Tamlin’s family throne is up for grabs,

Their monarch is dead and only 1 heir lasts,

How can the crown pass down to her?

She betrayed her family enciting a stir,

Before her beheading a pardon was passed,

High Chancellor why am I not condemned?

Do you wish to sink, if so you’ll swim?

I wish to protect those whom I must hate

Then build up the realm and Recreate

A rule that’s just and fair for them.

A tattered shirt falls to the floor,

The mercernary can be no more,

I wash away my treason and shave,

Princess to Queen I must now behave,

Well dressed and regal , I approach the court.

Sworn to rule I also vow to defend,

My people and my court for the evil within,

The oath is taken and vows are said,

The verses are spoken, I bend my head

Another prayer I owe this win,

I kneeled as Serena, a child ordained

I ascend to the top of the mountain of kings,

Presented to the world as next in line,

They praise and shout my name to the divine

Long Live the Queen, Forever shall I reign.

Hidden Treasures 5: Reign

Happy Monday friends! Thank you for tuning in to another Hidden Treasures segment where I try and shine the spotlight on a show, movie, book, game or any other item in our gaming and geek world that I feel is being “Overlooked.” Have you ever stopped and wondered, hey why isn’t this show or game getting more hype? It could be because of poor marketing, or just because in today’s world we have ENDLESS means of entertainment that some things are bound to fall through the cracks. Let’s jump into this week’s gem the TV Series Reign.

What would you do if the fate of a country was dependent on your choices and actions? As I have mentioned a few times before I have a great affinity and fascination with historical dramas at the moment. My spiral into this world of Queens, Kings, Vikings and Mercenaries actually began right her with Reign (Thank you Netflix!). Reign is the retelling of the journey of Mary, Queen of Scots as she fights for survival, freedom and her country of Scotland. Mary was crowned Queen of reign-3 Scotland a few days after her birth due to her father James’ untimely death. Even though her mother Marie De Guise was still alive and kicking, in that time the rightful heir would have been the child born to the king, Mary. Because of Scotland’s ongoing battle with their too close for comfort rivals, England, Mary was sent to live out her developmental days with the nuns.

This is where the story gets interesting. Mary is now of age to marry and assume rule of her country. Due to the despairing events at the convent, Mary is sent to her betrothed in France, Francis. Reign is a loose retelling of actual events as documented between Mary and Francis, however, for dramatic effect I doubt the Queen’s Seer Nostradamus had a hand in most of the events that occurred. reign-4 Mary is joined in France by her childhood maidens and friends from Scotland as they begin to get a taste of French Court. With obstacles abound such as assassins, politics and Catherine De Medici, can Mary really hope to solidify her marriage to Francis

and save her deteriorating country of Scotland? Watch and find out! the first 3 seasons of Reign is on Netflix and the new season premiered February 10th, 2017 on The CW. Did I mention that Mary is the cousin to Elizabeth I, that should prove interesting with the England/Scotland debacle :).

Watch the Trailer for Season 1 here! Reign Trailer

Quotes:

  • “Let him talk like a King, you won’t be married until I say so.” – Catherine

Play:

  • A fairly accurate retelling of Mary Queen of Scots’ teenage years
  • Excellent dramatic and fantasy added elements to keep the viewer entertained
  • A Strong heroine figure
  • Game of Thrones meets The Tudors!

Skip:

  • You are not particularly fond of historical period pieces
  • You can’t get past the first few episodes (In my opinion starts slow but you need to have the backstory right?)

All in all I really enjoy this series and writing about it makes me want to watch some more! What are some of your favorite historical drama series? What decisions would you make as Queen/King? Let’s talk hidden treasures!

Have a great week!
