Countdown to 2018: Favorite Movies of 2017!

Happy Sunday Novas! Today is the last day December and New Year’s Eve! I have 1 other countdown post that will release tomorrow at 3PM EST and it is my 10/10 Recommends post of 2017! This post will go over my top 10 items of 2017 that I highly recommend. It can be video games, movies, food, etc. Tune in tomorrow to see my recommends! In this series,  we have already tackled video games, series (tv shows) and today we will take on Movies! The requirements will be movies that released in 2017 (so I could have watched them in the theaters or on Blu Ray). Let’s get to my top 5 movies of 2017!

#5 Power Rangers –

power rangers

The revamped and reimagined Power Rangers movie released this year and the reviews have been subpar. My brother bought the movie on Blu-Ray when it released and we watched it that night. I can see why lovers of the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers would not like the movie and yes, we don’t see the suits as much, but I really enjoyed the movie for a few reasons.

  1. They’re Teenagers with Attitude! Actually, Kenny (my brother) pointed this out to me while we watched the movie. In the original opening,Zordon tells Alpha to find teenagers with attitude to help save the day. What we received were perfect students in the original series. This series will always hold a place in my heart, but the originals didn’t really have attitude.
  2. The Story- We forget that Rita Repulsa was a ranger. This story delves into that a bit more and explains a tale of why Rita turned evil.

#4 Thor: Ragnarok –

Thor

Thor was an AMAZINGGGGG movie. You can read my spoiler free review of Thor by clicking here! I really love Loki and the Superhero movies have been on point this year. The comedic addition to the movie also made it a fun movie to watch.

#3 Wonder Woman –

wonderwoman

I was debating on Wonder Woman being the number 2 or 3 movie. It settled in at number 3 but this is a fantastic movie. As you’ve probably heard, Gal Gadot did a fantastic job in capturing the Amazon Princess character and bringing her to the big screen. This is one of the few movies where die hard comic fans and moms were enjoying the action together. The plot was good, the effects and fighting scenes were seamless. 10/10 would recommend Wonder Woman to any person looking for a good action movie. I didn’t review Wonder Woman, but I’m telling you, it was amazing!

#2 Star Wars: The Last Jedi –

images

I’m one of the people that really enjoyed the new Stars Wars movie. I know it moves away from the canon, but personally, I didn’t really care about the old Jedi /Sith religions in the previous Star Wars movies. Talking about balance to the force, everyone assumed it would be a balance for good, but I interpreted it as a balance to which ever side was losing. But seeing Rey and Kylo Ren (who is quickly becoming one of my favorite characters) interact and fight was a bonus. A few questions were answered but not the ones that people wanted to know. You can read my review of Star Wars by clicking here.

#1 Beauty and the Beast –

beauty

Belle has always been my favorite Disney princess so when I heard about the new live action Beauty and the Beast movie hitting theaters, I made sure my boyfriend knew that this was a priority. Sure enough he bought tickets and we were there opening weekend. I think this is one of the more accurate and excellent productions from the original. The clothing, the songs and the people each fit their role perfectly and a masterpiece was born. I even cried at the end, no judgement please lol. Beauty and the Beast is by far my favorite movie of 2018! You can read my review by clicking here!

Those are my top movies of 2017, from the ones that I was able to watch this year. What are your top movies of 2017? Which movies are you looking forward to in 2018? Let’s talk movies!

Luna’s Rankings: Favorite (Recent) Superhero Movies!

Happy Tuesday Novas! I posted a review for Thor: Ragnarok on Sunday and that got me thinking about my favorite Superhero movies of all time! Since there are plenty of crime fighting movies to go around, this will be a 3 part series. This week I will rank my top Superheor movies in the past 5 years. Next week I will rank my top Superhero movies from my childhood and the week after that I will rank my top superhero movies of all time! Let’s jump straight into my rankings from least favorite to favorite (note anything that doesn’t make the list is not in my top 5!)

bane_in_the_dark_knight_rises-wide
He’s sooo cool!

The Dark Knight Rises The Dark Knight comes towards the bottom of my list because well for 1 I’m not a Batman fan at all. I was actually forced to watch this movie when I was at my friends house when it released on DvD. What I really loved about this movie wasn’t the DArk Knight himself, but the villain Bane! Bane was amazing,. Convincing and he really made the movie. If you haven’t read any of my other posts regarding villains, I’m more of a villain type of girl!

Thor: The Darkworld– I really loveee Loki and Those the Darkworld only enhanced that love for Tom Hiddleson’s character. Don’t ask me the plot because I don’t really remember, I just remember Loki made sacrifices due to the personal issue that both he and Thor were facing.

The Lego Movie – EVERYTHING IS AWESOME!!!! Who says heros have to have superpowers, cool gadgets or be a mega ba-zillionaire? The Lego movie gave our small, everyman a voice and a chance to save the world, albeit the Lego World, but still. This movie was amazing and should be how we everyday people try to live and be heroes in our lives every day!

Thor

Thor: Ragnarok – This recent Thor movie inspired the topic for today’s post. I really love the movie and you can read my thoughts and review of the movie by clicking here!

hulk1

The Avengers – The original Avengers movie is my absolute favorite! My favorite superhero of all time is Ironman so meshing him together with Marvel’s best and having Robert Downey Jr. take the lead really drew me in. I liked the banter and the interaction between each of the heroes.

wonder

Wonder Woman – To preference my reasoning for selecting Wonder Woman with Gal Gadot as my favorite superhero movie in the past 5 years, I have to tell you that I was NEVER a Wonder Woman fan. The previews for Wonder Woman this year have been amazing and I was prepared to set my biases aside and watch, in theaters. This movie was so well done to me, so much so that I was instantly turned into a Wonder Woman fan! I can’t say enough about how great the movie, direction and acting was in Wonder Woman, so I will just stop here. It’s amazing and if you haven’t seen it, GO WATCH IT!

Notable Mentions that I haven’t seen: Logan, Guardians of the Galaxy,  Spiderman Homecoming, Justice League, TMNT and TMNT 2.

What are your favorite superhero movies from the past 5 years? HAve you seen any of the movies on my list? Let’s talk superheros!

Thor: Ragnarok Movie Review!

Happy Sunday Novas! Last night I was FINALLY able to see the new Thor movie; Ragnarok! I know that I am a few weeks late, but I wanted to review the movie and if anyone hasn’t watched it yet, try to give your the insights to the movie! This is a spoiler free review so don’t worry about having to quickly close the post if I say something crazy!

Story: Thor Ragnarok takes place after the Thor Darkworld and Avengers 2 movies in the Marvel timeline. Thor has returned home to Asgard in lieu of dreams that he has been seeing about the destruction of his home in an event known as Ragnarok! After receiving confirmation that his dream is a premonition on what is prophesied to happen, Thor returns home to seek guidance from his father Odin.

(Note: In the lore, Ragnarok is the apocalypse where the gods Odin and Fenrir (a giant wolf ) battle!)

Thor must call upon the help of friends, strangers and even his mischievous brother Loki to save his home from certain destruction! thor 3

Ambience: The setting and colors of Ragnarok are exactly what you would want to see in a superhero movie. We have bright vibrant colors on Asgard and the warriors on the planet are strong and worthy of being subjects for Thor’s family.

Characters: The characters and the style of this movie is different from the first 2 Thor movies! Ragnarok, ironically takes on a more comical side of things with everyone throwing out puns. We are introduced to new characters that play their role very well. I’m sure we’ll be seeing most of these cosplay outfits at next year’s conventions! I have to admit, I really wanted to see this movie because I can’t get enough of Tom Hiddleson’s version of Loki! I feel as if he has played this role successfully and there’s plenty of Loki in Ragnarok! Thor 2

It’s that time of the review where I will list my top reasons to Play or Skip Thor Ragnarok!

Play:

  • A refreshing take on the Thor character and events (almost every scene has a joke or pun in it)
  • If you are obsessed with Loki as I am! (He appears quite a bit)
  • To stay up to date with the events happening in the Marvel Universe! (The movie connects to the Avengers and last Darkworld seamlessly)

Skip:

  • If you’re looking for the movie to be a replica of canon (liberal freedom was definitely taken)
  • If you prefer a more action based Marvel movie

Final Thoughts: The movie lived up to my expectations! I wanted more Loki, which I received, Action and a great story! All of these elements are presented in Ragnarok with the addition of unexpected comedy. If you have liked any of the Marvel movies so far, you will definitely love Thor Ragnarok.

Thank you for reading my review of Thor:Ragnarok! Tune in next week for my review of Star wars: The Last Jedi (my brother reserved us tickets last month lol).  Have you seen the movie yet? What are some of your favorite scenes? What movies are you excited about seeing or have seen this year? Let’s talk movies!

We Need to Talk About Kevin

split-2017-movie-reviews

Hello all! Maria here, and I hope you all are doing great this week! And yes, I am here with another review, but this one is different. Why, do you ask? Well, it’s not a review for a Netflix series or even a basic television series at that, as are most of the reviews on this blog, but it’s a review for a film. I don’t see as many reviews for films on here, so today’s review is going to be a treat for you all.

(Actually, I stand corrected…I shouldn’t say “today’s review” because I will be writing another review right after this one, for a series on Hulu called Versailles. You’ll see it either today after this one or tomorrow, depending on when I finish it.)

This film review is going to be all about one of the most recent M. Night Shyamalan film, Split. I had the opportunity to watch it last weekend with a good friend of mine on Netflix, and let’s just say…it was very interesting. And dark in a few places. I would say, actually, it’s kind of disturbing to boot. But my eyes stayed stuck to that film, no matter what.

A brief synopsis: Split is about a guy, Kevin, who has Dissociative Identity Disorder (otherwise known as multiple personalities). His psychiatrist, Dr. Fletcher, has witnessed 23 of them, but there is one that has yet to materialize. At least, not until he kidnaps three teenage girls in a parking lot after knocking out the father of one of them. If you’ve seen the trailer for this movie when it first came out, then you may recall this scene. What happens after that, though, and after you see the girls imprisoned under the basement of a zoo, things themselves begin to spiral as you see Kevin go into one personality after another, eventually getting to the 24th mysterious one.

As I said before, this movie is anything but lighthearted, it is one of the more disturbing films I have ever seen. I’m sure some reading this will be asking, “Why did you keep on watching it? Why didn’t you choose something else on Netflix?” Well, there a few reasons why. First off, I wanted to see if the girls were going to get out alive; second, just seeing Kevin in his various personalities was intriguing, and having been a psychology major, anything psychology related always fascinates me. This film was basically the Netflix film I could not put down.

(As far as being lighthearted, there was one part in the film which made me laugh a little. I’m not sure if any of you watch Adventure Time, or have in the past, but there is a character on there called the Earl of Lemongrab, who is known for his “UNACCEPTABLE” scream. One of Kevin’s personalities, “Dennis”, is looking at the bathroom connected to where the girls are being kept, and he says that it’s in “unacceptable” condition. And to be fair, “Dennis” looks a bit like Lemongrab.)

lemongrab_by_twillis-d6266g9

In summary, I would have to give Split a 4.5/5.

With that said, I hope you enjoyed this review, and be sure to stay tuned for Versailles!

Hidden Treasures 3: Allegiant!

Hiya Gamers, Geeks & Friends! Welcome to week 3 of the Hidden Treasures weekly post (click here to view Hidden Treasure 1: iZombie or here for Hidden Treasures 2: Nerve ). To familiarize you with the post, each Monday I will talk about an item that I believe is “Overlooked” and should have the attention of more people. This section can range from Video Games to Movies or Series. There overview done, now let’s get to this week’s topic the “Allegiant” movie. Before you decide to stop reading, hear me out on this movie and why I think that more people should give it a chance. I have read the Divergent, Insurgent and Allegiant books by Veronica Roth. I was very excited when the films were being released and Divergent was one of my first film reviews (maybe I’ll post that review one day). This was the first time that I had read the book first and then watched the movie.

Allegiant is the 3rd movie in the Divergent Series (both the film and books). Divergent is the story of Tris and others who are raised in the post dystopian city of Chicago. The world as we know it is in ruin and the city of Chicago built up walls and a fence to guard against anything negative beyond the wall (sounds like Game of Thrones doesn’t it :-p). To keep the city and people under control they are divided into 5 factions in which the personalities of each individual will be utilized to further the succession of the city. divergent These factions are Candor ( The Honest), Abnegation (The Selfless), Erudite (The Intelligent), Dauntless (The Brave) and Amity (The Peaceful). Each one of these factions controlled an essential part of Chicago and allowed for the city to grow and prosper. The Candor controlled the courts, Abnegation ruled the government, Erudite were the Doctors and Scientists, Dauntless were the protectors and Amity were the farmers. Everyone co existed together harmoniously. So how were people placed in the factions you may ask? Well the teens had to take an aptitude test. The aptitude test that each citizen took as a teenager placed them in their correct faction in which they would live out their lives. This meant that some families would be broken up and the teens would go to live with their new “families.”

There were citizens who received test results placing them in more than 1 faction. This was considered being a Divergent as you did not fit into 1 category. Divergents are considered abominations and are sought out and disposed of. That’s the premise of the series. Now lets fast forward to the 3rd film Allegiant. Allegiant is the story of Tris and friends leaving their long time home in Chicago and heading out to see if there’s life beyond the wall. For 200 years they thought Chicago was the last surviving city and now they’re going to find a world beyond their comprehension. the_divergent_series_allegiant_hd_screencaps-21 The journey will even finally reveal what being “Divergent” really means. How would you feel if everything you have ever known and believed was turned upside down? What would you do?

Allegiant is the 3rd film and did not get as many ratings as the 1st and 2nd films. I believe that the decline in attendance was caused by the 2nd film Insurgent. Insurgent had a pretty good turn out in theaters, however the movie didn’t follow the books as much as Divergent did. A few of the concepts were a little weird and they made the movie in 3D which didn’t help out with the story line. Allegiant actually stayed pretty true to the book. In my opinion it was very well portrayed, the action aligned well throughout the story and you are able to see the connections within each individual character (I’m being pretty vague here as I don’t want to spoil anything in case you decide to watch 🙂 ). The movie has action, mystery and a bit of romance.

All in all, watch the trailer and think about watching Allegiant! Do you really need to watch Insurgent and Divergent first? I would recommend watching Divergent for sure. Insurgent, even though it wasn’t as good you can still watch for more back story, however, as I have stated it veered away from the book so I don’t really think it is needed to be able to enjoy Allegiant. Take a look at the trailer below and then make your choice.

Allegiant Trailer

Thank you for tuning in to this week’s Hidden Treasures! What movies do you really enjoy but many people have not seen? Have you seen Allegiant? If so, what did you think about it compared to Divergent and Insurgent? Let’s talk Movies!

“I don’t want to be just one thing. I can’t be. I want to be brave, and I want to be selfless, intelligent, and honest and kind. Well, I’m still working on kind.” -Four. This quote is from Divergent I know, but it still relates to Allegiant.

Hidden Treasures 2: Nerve

Hiya readers and friends! This week’s installment of Hidden Treasures will touch on a movie that I rarely hear anything about; Nerve. Just a quick recap, the Hidden Treasures post will go over a movie, show or video game that I believe more people should be watching. Every Monday I will highlight this “Hidden Treasure” and open up the floor for discussion or recommendations. Let’s jump into the movie!

Nerve is the story of an over achiever named Vee . nerve-pic1 The story takes place during Vee’s senior year of high school when she is debating on going to college close to home or going out on a limb and going to an art school across the country. Vee is the normal protagonist character who does whatever she is told and never commits to anything outside of her comfort zone. One day her best friend tells her to live a little and sign up for a virtual truth or dare game called Nerve. Vee was originally going to sign up as a “Watcher” who pays to watch the “Players” perform outrageous dares. The incentive for the “Players” in performing the user suggested dares is simple, they receive money for each dare completed.

The movie takes a turn when Vee gets upset and switches her status to Player mode. This is where the action picks up as the timid Vee begins to peel out of her comfort zone and perform for the watchers.  nerve2-opt She is also paired up with a partner for most of her dares courtesy of the “watchers” whose name is Ian. Ian does his best to continue pushing Vee to perform the dares as his completion becomes dependent on her.The dares grow significantly harder and turns this high school drama into an all out thriller movie.

I think that Nerve is a pretty good movie to watch because it shifts from a cheesy High School movie to an entertaining series of events. Yes, most of the scenes will be predictable but its a new concept on a classic Truth or Dare game. I can say that the ending scenes did catch me by surprise. Stop by Redbox and check out Nerve, this week’s pick for an overlooked movie. The question is are you going to be a Watcher or Player?

I triple, dog dare you! 😉
