Luna’s Rankings: Favorite (Recent) Superhero Movies!

Happy Tuesday Novas! I posted a review for Thor: Ragnarok on Sunday and that got me thinking about my favorite Superhero movies of all time! Since there are plenty of crime fighting movies to go around, this will be a 3 part series. This week I will rank my top Superheor movies in the past 5 years. Next week I will rank my top Superhero movies from my childhood and the week after that I will rank my top superhero movies of all time! Let’s jump straight into my rankings from least favorite to favorite (note anything that doesn’t make the list is not in my top 5!)

bane_in_the_dark_knight_rises-wide
He’s sooo cool!

The Dark Knight Rises The Dark Knight comes towards the bottom of my list because well for 1 I’m not a Batman fan at all. I was actually forced to watch this movie when I was at my friends house when it released on DvD. What I really loved about this movie wasn’t the DArk Knight himself, but the villain Bane! Bane was amazing,. Convincing and he really made the movie. If you haven’t read any of my other posts regarding villains, I’m more of a villain type of girl!

Thor: The Darkworld– I really loveee Loki and Those the Darkworld only enhanced that love for Tom Hiddleson’s character. Don’t ask me the plot because I don’t really remember, I just remember Loki made sacrifices due to the personal issue that both he and Thor were facing.

914jy25FJGL._SL1425_

The Lego Movie – EVERYTHING IS AWESOME!!!! Who says heros have to have superpowers, cool gadgets or be a mega ba-zillionaire? The Lego movie gave our small, everyman a voice and a chance to save the world, albeit the Lego World, but still. This movie was amazing and should be how we everyday people try to live and be heroes in our lives every day!

Thor

Thor: Ragnarok – This recent Thor movie inspired the topic for today’s post. I really love the movie and you can read my thoughts and review of the movie by clicking here!

hulk1

The Avengers – The original Avengers movie is my absolute favorite! My favorite superhero of all time is Ironman so meshing him together with Marvel’s best and having Robert Downey Jr. take the lead really drew me in. I liked the banter and the interaction between each of the heroes.

wonder

Wonder Woman – To preference my reasoning for selecting Wonder Woman with Gal Gadot as my favorite superhero movie in the past 5 years, I have to tell you that I was NEVER a Wonder Woman fan. The previews for Wonder Woman this year have been amazing and I was prepared to set my biases aside and watch, in theaters. This movie was so well done to me, so much so that I was instantly turned into a Wonder Woman fan! I can’t say enough about how great the movie, direction and acting was in Wonder Woman, so I will just stop here. It’s amazing and if you haven’t seen it, GO WATCH IT!

Notable Mentions that I haven’t seen: Logan, Guardians of the Galaxy,  Spiderman Homecoming, Justice League, TMNT and TMNT 2.

What are your favorite superhero movies from the past 5 years? HAve you seen any of the movies on my list? Let’s talk superheros!

CWL Dallas Results!

Power up players! This past weekend was the first Call of Duty competitive event for Call of Duty World at War! We have crowned our first tournament of the season, but before I announce the winning team in the $200,000 prize pool open tournament, let’s talk about some of the highlights of the weekend! You can view my predictions post by clicking here!

The event started on Friday December 8th with the massive open bracket and stacked Pool Play teams. The event was cut short by a supposed bomb threat and that threw off the tournament and the players for the rest of the weekend. The streams and games cancelled for the rest of Friday evening, which set a strict timeline for Saturday and Sunday.

Pool Play

The bulk of the pool play matches took place on Saturday and many of the matches did not have short intermissions like we were used to in previous events. It was one map after the other which was great for the viewers but may have been an added stressor for the players. The results of pool play are below

Pool A – Optic and NV

Pool B – LG and Ground Zero

Pool C – Team Kaliber and Red Reserve

Pool D – Splyce and eUnited

Open Bracket:

I think the biggest effect that the delay of the event had was definitely on the open bracket teams. The open bracket normally plays Friday nights and Saturday mornings, however, because of the incident, they were forced to play over 10 hours on Saturday. This could have fatigued the teams before being inserted into the deadly pools and having to face some of the best teams in the world. That is not an excuse, but you can wonder how that would have affected some of the matches in pools.

The four teams that came out of pool play were Echo Fox, Allegiance, Faze and Next Threat .

All 4 of these teams are known and I was not surprised that they emerged into Pool Play. Echo Fox moved to Pool A, Allegiance moved to Pool B, Next Threat went to Pool C and Faze went to Pool D (Pool of Death!).

Championship Bracket:

Champ bracket consisted of the top 2 teams from each pool battling against each other in a best of 5 series. The number 1 teams were randomly drawn against the number 2 teams. The remaining teams were not eliminated, but placed in the loser’s bracket in which 1 loss eliminates you from the competition. The Champ matches are displayed below.

Winners Round 1:

Optic versus Red Reserve

Ground Zero versus Splyce

Team Kaliber versus Echo Fox

eUnited versus Luminosity

Winners Round 2:

Optic vs Splyce

TK vs eUnited

Bracket

Finals: Optic beat Splyce and sent them to the losers bracket where they took on the winner faze. In the winner’s finals, Optic lost to TK and was sent to the losers bracket to take on the winners of Splyce versus Faze! Splyce pulled out an impressive victory over Faze and battled the team that sent them to the loser’s bracket, Optic Gaming in the Loser’s Bracket Finals! Splyce pulled off the 3-0 to send Optic Gaming out of the tournament and advance to the Grand Finals where Team Kaliber was waiting.

Splyce versus TK ended with Team Kaliber winning CWL Dallas! I didn’t see that one coming but TK played fantastically the whole way through. Breakout star Kenny really sealed the deal for Team Kaliber and I can see them being a threat in the coming events.

Do you watch any competitive Esports? Did you watch CWL Dallas? Who were your favorites? Who were some surprise teams? Let’s talk Esports!

Thor: Ragnarok Movie Review!

Happy Sunday Novas! Last night I was FINALLY able to see the new Thor movie; Ragnarok! I know that I am a few weeks late, but I wanted to review the movie and if anyone hasn’t watched it yet, try to give your the insights to the movie! This is a spoiler free review so don’t worry about having to quickly close the post if I say something crazy!

Story: Thor Ragnarok takes place after the Thor Darkworld and Avengers 2 movies in the Marvel timeline. Thor has returned home to Asgard in lieu of dreams that he has been seeing about the destruction of his home in an event known as Ragnarok! After receiving confirmation that his dream is a premonition on what is prophesied to happen, Thor returns home to seek guidance from his father Odin.

(Note: In the lore, Ragnarok is the apocalypse where the gods Odin and Fenrir (a giant wolf ) battle!)

Thor must call upon the help of friends, strangers and even his mischievous brother Loki to save his home from certain destruction! thor 3

Ambience: The setting and colors of Ragnarok are exactly what you would want to see in a superhero movie. We have bright vibrant colors on Asgard and the warriors on the planet are strong and worthy of being subjects for Thor’s family.

Characters: The characters and the style of this movie is different from the first 2 Thor movies! Ragnarok, ironically takes on a more comical side of things with everyone throwing out puns. We are introduced to new characters that play their role very well. I’m sure we’ll be seeing most of these cosplay outfits at next year’s conventions! I have to admit, I really wanted to see this movie because I can’t get enough of Tom Hiddleson’s version of Loki! I feel as if he has played this role successfully and there’s plenty of Loki in Ragnarok! Thor 2

It’s that time of the review where I will list my top reasons to Play or Skip Thor Ragnarok!

Play:

  • A refreshing take on the Thor character and events (almost every scene has a joke or pun in it)
  • If you are obsessed with Loki as I am! (He appears quite a bit)
  • To stay up to date with the events happening in the Marvel Universe! (The movie connects to the Avengers and last Darkworld seamlessly)

Skip:

  • If you’re looking for the movie to be a replica of canon (liberal freedom was definitely taken)
  • If you prefer a more action based Marvel movie

Final Thoughts: The movie lived up to my expectations! I wanted more Loki, which I received, Action and a great story! All of these elements are presented in Ragnarok with the addition of unexpected comedy. If you have liked any of the Marvel movies so far, you will definitely love Thor Ragnarok.

Thank you for reading my review of Thor:Ragnarok! Tune in next week for my review of Star wars: The Last Jedi (my brother reserved us tickets last month lol).  Have you seen the movie yet? What are some of your favorite scenes? What movies are you excited about seeing or have seen this year? Let’s talk movies!

Coco Pixar Review

Once again, Pixar has outdone themselves with their newest Box Office hit, Coco. Last Saturday night, my boyfriend and his family (who are Mexican-American) went to see the movie and were completely in awe of the storyline, the detail of the characters and colorful scenes, and the realness they captured and portrayed of the Mexican Culture and the importance of family values!

I had no idea what to expect before going into the theatre other then the fact that Coco was about the Day of the Dead which is celebrated in Mexico while also following the story of a little boy. After watching the movie, I have to say, Coco is one of my new favorite Pixar and Disney movies ever and I am pretty sure I am not the only one who thinks that! Coco has a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and has grossed over 26.1 Million dollars in sales since its release!

fullscene
One of the best scenes in the entire movie! You really have to watch it for yourself to understand!

To give you a bit of an overview, Coco follows the story of a young boy named Miguel, who is passionately in love with music and wants to follow his dreams of playing the guitar like his beloved idol, Ernesto de la Cruz, even though his family has a generations-old ban on music and anything to do with it. With his whole family against him and his dream, Miguel runs away to prove his talent to his family and ends up in the colorful world of the Land of the Dead! Miguel learns more about his families history and meets a charming trickster named Hector and uncovers the real meaning of family. (I am trying so hard not to give anything away!)

COCO
The orange flower seen throughout the film is the Aztec marigold (known also as the Mexican marigold or the Cempasúchil). The flower is used in the tradition of Dia de Muertos in México to connect the living from the dead.

I think it is amazing that Pixar was able to feature the importance of Family, Life, Death, and cultural all in one movie and have it all flow together so nicely. Especially since Pixar’s main audience is children. I also am beyond pleased with how they pictured and portrayed the Mexican culture. Throughout the movie, I could hear my boyfriend and his family whisper about how the town looked so familiar and how relatable it was for them. All of those little details add to the movie and help make it what it is!

One of my favorite characters from Coco was Dante,

dante
Dante

the Xolo dog which is a tribute to Frida Kahlo! Dante was extremely cute and I loved that his tongue hung out from his mouth! His connection to Miguel is so heartwarming and made me think of my fur babies! It probably doesn’t help that I love dogs so much so my love for him isn’t really that big of a surprise!

Of course Pixar included hidden Easter Eggs through the movie and I am proud to say that I was able to catch a few! You can spot the Pizza Planet Truck on the street when Miguel is running and at the start of the movie, you can see Piñatas of Buzz LightYear, Woody, Mike Wazowski and a few other characters! I love finding the Easter Eggs and will be on the lookout for more the next time I watch it!

I have yet to visit Mexico, (I also have yet to get my Passport) but I have seen thousands of pictures and have heard hundreds of stories and from my perception., I feel like it properly portrayed the streets and people of Mexico! Now there are people pointing out flaws that the movie had but I honestly didn’t see any and don’t care to find out what they are. Instead of focusing on the negative aspects, I rather enjoy all of the positive elements of the movie!

I highly recommend everyone to see Coco! You do not have to be Hispanic or Mexican to enjoy this movie which I feel is important to say as some people think that you have to be, in order to see this film. I honestly can’t wait to watch it again and again and again!!

Luna’s Rankings: Favorite Holiday Characters!

Happy Tuesday Novas! Thank you for reading today’s rankings post! Before last month, I would post my Top Rankings for a specified topic and give my reasons why. Now that November is over, I can get back to the Rankings Posts and this week we are keeping with the Holiday Spirit!

I will be Ranking my: Favorite Holiday Characters! Let’s see my top characters from least favorite to favorite!

  • Santa Claus – I’m not really a Santa Claus kind of girl. When I think back, I never believed in Santa because my grandmother let us know up front who purchased the presents lol. I also think that I was too smart for my age and I would’ve questioned everything, like if Santa goes down chimneys and we don’t have one (I mean I live in Florida), is he just breaking in our house at night? Rather than having to make up a story as to how Santa broke in and risk scaring me for life, my grandmother just never mentioned Santa until we went to take pictures with him at the mall.
  • Rudolph The Red Nose Reindeer The story of Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer is an inspiring one about being who you are and cherishing attributes that are different. Rudolph went through adversity with having a bright red nose but he never gave up on his dreams of being a part of Santa’s sleigh. He ended up finding his purpose in the world and making friends!
  • The Grinch   grinch I have ALWAYS loved the Grinch. I’m a sucker for the stories of characters finding themselves and coming around in the end and my affinity for villains makes the choice of the Grinch no huge surprised. I watch The Grinch Who Stole Christmas multiple times during the Holiday season and I really love Max, the dog! The Grinch has captured my heart when I was a girl and it grows 2 sizes every year!
  • Gingerbread Man- The Gingerbread bread man is a classic character and treat to have during the Holidays. Specifically, I am talking about Gingy from Shrek. Gingy is an essential part of Christmas for me.When I was younger, each year we would build Gingerbread Houses and have Hot Chocolate in class and at home. The comfortable feeling of the Holidays is inspired by Gingerbread men for me.
  • Frosty The Snowman  snow  The number 1 holiday character for me has always been Frosty the Snowman. Maybe it’s because I have never seen or touched snow in my life, so I end up wanting to build a snowman every year! Frosty was the friend I always wanted growing up and I still get teary eyed when he melts at the end of the movie. Frosty is the pinnacle of friendship and togetherness for the Holidays!

Those are my rankings of my favorite Holiday Characters from least favorite to favorite! Who did I miss? What are your favorite holiday characters and why? Let’s Talk Holidays!

I did it! I’ve completed the NaNoWriMo challenged and wrote a novel in 30 days (really 29 days because I finished a day early!). It was really hard and as you can see from the numbers, I slowed down towards the end (Thanksgiving played a large role in the decline), but in the end, I’ve pushed through the days of laziness and the days where I’ve felt like i couldn’t write anything and it has paid off tremendously. Thank you to everyone who was rooting for me and everyone prticipating in the challenge.

With the other updates I have included an excerpt from the story, so I will include one final snippet from the book titled: A Dance With Destiny!

Blurb: A kingdom in turmoil, an heiress’ position being challenged, a forced betrothal. Can Princess Ariana carry on the family dynasty of the House of Tamlin with a 16 year old secret looking to take everything away? Told through the eyes of household characters, a journal floats around the land. How will she cope? Will she survive? And will she ascend as the ruler of the kingdom? It is truly a dance with destiny!

The first time that I realized that I could rule was when the Dauphin of France studied at the same library as I. I was away from court for 8 months at this time and my scholars had me studying the philosophies of Galileo. The Dauphin, Francois was announced and he walked through with the arrogance of a king in waiting. Francois was 4 years older than me and ordered everyone around as if he were already ruling the country. I took it upon myself to test all of the skills I have learned over the years through observation and awareness. I introduced myself to the Dauphin and with the flirtatious techniques learned with my mother, I posed intelligent questions that I knew a prince would know the answer to. After flaunting my brilliance and catering to the Dauphin’s ego, I started making suggestions as to how the library could improve its processes. The Dauphin was so impressed that he began to think the ideas were his and after a week, the changes were made. I knew then I had a talent for ruling and a talent for persuasion and the Dauphin set me on a path, that I could not return from.

You may be wondering, why I think that I can be a better ruler. On all of my campaigns, I had to travel through cities that were forgotten. There’s been crime, murder and a disregard for the monarchy. If we are anointed by God, why does so many of our people despise us? It’s because of greed and envy. They want us to treat them as equals when they have not worked for it. Their allegiances are wavering to whomever benefits them at the time and they do not know true loyalty or respect. One of the philosophers that I have been reading says that the only way to truly rule is through fear. Being loved and respected is great, but love is fickle and waivers to the person that is providing the most benefits at the time. I aim to have both. To the outside world I will be loved, the only surviving heir. But behind the scenes, I will have my mercenaries bring law and order through an iron fist and a merciless rule.

This is not the final chapter for me or my work. I am L, I am the only person that can truly bring greatness to our country. Not by kindness and the education of our people, but by ruling with an iron fist. Fear is the only option for a people so proud and entitled. Until I am old enough, I must play the part of the hand that I was dealt. But my supporters are lying in wait for me to rally the nobles and commoners to my side. I will take the throne, even if I have to take it by force.

What I’ve learned?

LP_hero

Since this was my first experience with NaNoWriMo and actually completing a story, I’ve picked up some great tips that I want to share.

  • Plan in advance – Creating an outline before you take on a writing task is highly recommended. I am a pantser and I can sit and write quickly once I have an idea, but sometimes I lose my way. That’s where the outline comes in handy! On days that I did not feel inspired to write, I read through my outline and it helped me gather my thoughts so that I could write through the writer’s block!
  • Just Keep Writing – My co-worker Mrs. Michelle is a writer and she has been invaluable through this experience. Any time I have a doubt or I start to freak out because of the pressure, she would give me sound advice. The best thing she told me throughout the process was “Just Keep Writing! Right now you are just shoveling sand in the sandbox. During the editing process you will create the castle.” I don’t know why that saying stuck with me but It did and the analogy helped me succeed.
  • Define Your Characters – So I had a very basic outline that did not have enough information in it, especially relating to my characters. This made it difficult and I had to use standard names until I found better ones to use. Thank God there is a Ctrl + F shortcode that allows you to find and replace words. It saved me in the end. Next time, I will define my characters, their traits and motives before writing.
  • In the end, everything will tie together – I was worried that my story wouldn’t make sense when I was getting to the end. Again, I was saved by my literary Angel Mrs. Michelle, she told me to trust in the system. She said that I would be surprised how everything ties itself together in the end and she was right! I knew somewhat about the ending, but i didn’t know where the gaps would fill in and with which characters, in the end everything seemed to naturally fit together with my outline of What if statements.

I’ve had an excellent experience with NaNoWriMo and I will definitely participate again next year. Now that I have tackled this mountain of a challenge, I will be back to writing full time on the blog starting Monday (a short writing break to recharge lol ). Have you participated in this challenge and what was your progress? Are you currently working on any projects? Let’s talk creative writing!
