Friendly Trends Ep 2: New Addictions

Happy Wednesday Novas! Thank you for reading the second installation of the Friendly Trends post! This segment will pretty much discuss some of the trends that my friends have “Put Me On” to and it’s my way of sharing these trends with you! The first segment was me talking about some of the Guilty Pleasure trends that I was put on to. Check out that post by clicking here!

Today, we will go over a few new addictions that I was introduced to. Starting with a few YouTubers and music!

My co-worker Megan (nagems21) was telling me about some great YouTubers that perform covers to songs. William Singe and Alex Aiono perform some of the top songs today in collaboration and separately. They’re flipping amazing!!!! Here’s my favorite collaboration.

I now have discovered a few more awesome YouTubers who perform covers and I love it! Here’s another one of my favorite covers by Alex and it’s a song that Selena put me on to.

One of my best friends Stephanie got me hooked on this new mobile game called Sky Islands (game review coming soon). Sky Islands is pretty much a mobile RPG anime game where you make money running your very own villa! You grow crops, serve guests, play Pinata Parties and other little mini games, while you collect rent from renters at your villas. Steph has been playing this game for a few weeks now and she spends HOURS on it! It’s actually pretty fun. During my trip up their last week Stephanie, myself and her little sister were jumping into Pinata Parties and taking the top 3 spots everytime! Screenshot_20170815-161921

My friend Selena also put me on to different music that I wasn’t aware of. I go to Selena for the latest Hip Hop and R&B hits because she’s always “Woke” (her words lol). Some of the songs that she has put me on to is “Don’t Mind” by Kent Jones, Torey Lane’s “Proud Family Remix” and “Or Nah” by Ty Dolla Sign. “Or Nah” is explicit so I recommend the edited version lol.

What are some new addictions that you were put on to by your friends? Do you find yourself developing new hobbies that your friends have? Let’s talk Friendly Trends!

Art Feature by Artist EF

Happy Friday Novas! I hope that you are having a fantastic week and are ready to enjoy the weekend! This past Wednesday was my birthday and hanging out with my friends and family was a blast. Today I will feature one of my friends artwork that we found on Thursday.

We were cleaning off my friend Emily’s porch and came across one of her old drawing pads. Both Storm and Spiderman look fantastic don’t you think? By the way it wasn’t a full size journal drawing, maybe like half the size of a normal sheet of paper.

I really like the shading in these 2 pictures. It’s crazy to watch people with natural talents create pieces of art. With Emily she is also very talented in the speed in which she can produce drawings. One of the fastest people I have ever known with pretty god quality in my opinion.

My two favorites are Storm and Naruto in a bowl of Ramen lol. I would leave her Twitter  information butttttt she has not taken my advice as of yet and set one up lol. Her Instagram is @emy_37. I’m just about to create her a portfolio on here until she creates her own lol. By the way she does graphic designs as well. Which are your favorite drawings? Do you draw, paint, etc? My creative outlet is in writing because I can’t even make stick figures look good lol.  Thank you fo reading and have a fantastic weekend!

Hidden Treasures 7: UnREAL

Happy Monday Gamers, Geeks and Friends! Thank you for reading this week’s Hidden Treasures post where I try to shine the spotlight on a video game, tv show or item that I feel is being “Overlooked.” This week I came across a great TV series on Hulu (which only happened because I fell asleep watching Family Guy and awoke to this show lol). Upon waking up (on Season 2) I went back to Season 1 and binge watched the entire 1st season. This series is AMAZING and I’m very surprised that I have never heard of it. Let’s get into the series! Oh yeah, check out the past Hidden Treasures Series by clicking here!

Have you ever wondered what happens behind the scenes of your favorite reality show? The creators of the TV Show UnReaL aim to answer these questions, in the most dramatic way possible! UnReaL is a dramatic television show that premiered on Lifetime, following the behind the scenes actions of the crew and contestants on a popular dating show. Yes, they pretty much made a drama about what could happen behind the scenes of a show like “The Bachelor.” Stick with me though this show is really good! You follow the main character Rachel who battles between her conscious and what’s best for ratings. Rachel has her own demons to battle with that the viewer becomes aware of from episode 1. Rachel is a producer who upon returning to the set of the multi-billion dollar production of “Everlasting” has to continue taking orders from her boss

quinn
Quinn, Executive Producer

Quinn to make each episode even more “Dramatic” then the last.

Characters:

Something that I love about this show is the development of each character. You have the producers Jay, Shiya and Rachel, The Bosses Quinn and Chet, The Suitor , The Crew and The contestants who all represent typical personalities that you would expect to see on a dating show. Moreover I just love how the show is believable and not too much over the edge. Adam Cromwell is the British Suitor that is the center of the affections of the cast. He plays the part of millionaire bachelor very well.

Rachel is also working with other producers, unreal3  Jay and Shiya, who all pretty much bring in their own “Girls” to make the show. If their girl stays on a week they get a bonus, if their girls fight or have an amazing moment, bonus! See the trend? Quinn, the boss and Executive Producer makes sure to incentivize her team and keep the Everlasting Empire on top of the charts, even if they tend to go a little too far! UnREAL shows what happens when everyone’s secrets are exploited and exposed.

Quotes:

“Come on, come on, come on, I need sad faces OK! Your puppy died, your implants got infected, I don’t care just use it!” – Quinn

“You focus on your future husband OK, I’ll take care of it!” – Rachel

“We have a saying around here, sluts get cut.” – Chet

“That girl hates me. I made her s*** her pants on national television.” – Rachel

This series is fantastic! It has drama, romance and a little suspense from viewing how far the producers will go to make a great episode. The scary thing about this series is that it’s very believable. We as viewers don’t  unreal2  know what happens off air and how the editing is put together for packages displayed on reality tv. We know that things are scripted, yes, but due to confidentiality agreements and other miles of paperwork signed by the contestants, there can be a lot of things that we really don’t know behind the scenes. UnReal tackles the issues and how each producer could cover up or manipulate a scenario.

Play:

  • Highly entertaining
  • Extremely believable actions as not to go over the top

Skip:

  • Adult themes and language
  • No interest in reality shows or drama

I definitely will be watching season 2 as a new suitor and cast of contestants will be featured. In my opinion the acting and story is pretty good for this show (but I love reality shows in general) and Lifetime definitely did a great job! Check out the trailer for season 1 here!

Let me know what you think! What other shows have you found that are currently “Overlooked?” Let’s talk Hidden Treasures! Have a great week!

Hidden Treasures 5: Reign

Happy Monday friends! Thank you for tuning in to another Hidden Treasures segment where I try and shine the spotlight on a show, movie, book, game or any other item in our gaming and geek world that I feel is being “Overlooked.” Have you ever stopped and wondered, hey why isn’t this show or game getting more hype? It could be because of poor marketing, or just because in today’s world we have ENDLESS means of entertainment that some things are bound to fall through the cracks. Let’s jump into this week’s gem the TV Series Reign.

What would you do if the fate of a country was dependent on your choices and actions? As I have mentioned a few times before I have a great affinity and fascination with historical dramas at the moment. My spiral into this world of Queens, Kings, Vikings and Mercenaries actually began right her with Reign (Thank you Netflix!). Reign is the retelling of the journey of Mary, Queen of Scots as she fights for survival, freedom and her country of Scotland. Mary was crowned Queen of reign-3 Scotland a few days after her birth due to her father James’ untimely death. Even though her mother Marie De Guise was still alive and kicking, in that time the rightful heir would have been the child born to the king, Mary. Because of Scotland’s ongoing battle with their too close for comfort rivals, England, Mary was sent to live out her developmental days with the nuns.

This is where the story gets interesting. Mary is now of age to marry and assume rule of her country. Due to the despairing events at the convent, Mary is sent to her betrothed in France, Francis. Reign is a loose retelling of actual events as documented between Mary and Francis, however, for dramatic effect I doubt the Queen’s Seer Nostradamus had a hand in most of the events that occurred. reign-4 Mary is joined in France by her childhood maidens and friends from Scotland as they begin to get a taste of French Court. With obstacles abound such as assassins, politics and Catherine De Medici, can Mary really hope to solidify her marriage to Francis

imageedit_7_5827840998
“You won’t love me, you won’t let yourself.” – Mary

and save her deteriorating country of Scotland? Watch and find out! the first 3 seasons of Reign is on Netflix and the new season premiered February 10th, 2017 on The CW. Did I mention that Mary is the cousin to Elizabeth I, that should prove interesting with the England/Scotland debacle :).

Watch the Trailer for Season 1 here! Reign Trailer

Quotes:

  • “Let him talk like a King, you won’t be married until I say so.” – Catherine

Play:

  • A fairly accurate retelling of Mary Queen of Scots’ teenage years
  • Excellent dramatic and fantasy added elements to keep the viewer entertained
  • A Strong heroine figure
  • Game of Thrones meets The Tudors!

Skip:

  • You are not particularly fond of historical period pieces
  • You can’t get past the first few episodes (In my opinion starts slow but you need to have the backstory right?)

All in all I really enjoy this series and writing about it makes me want to watch some more! What are some of your favorite historical drama series? What decisions would you make as Queen/King? Let’s talk hidden treasures!

Have a great week!

Hidden Treasures 5: Sleepy Hollow T.V. Series

Happy Monday Gamers, Geeks and Friends! Today’s post will be the weekly Hidden Treasures post where I try and shine the spotlight on a movie, show or video game that I would regard as an “Overlooked” item. You can view all of our past Hidden Treasure entries by clicking here.  This week I want to give the space to one of my favorite current T.V. Shows; Sleepy Hollow! Sleepy Hollow is an American, historical drama series that follows characters Abby Mills and Ichabod Crane. slee

Forget what you know about Sleepy Hollow from the Headless Horseman to the Movie starring Johnny Depp, this show takes a slightly different approach to the original lore. Sleepy Hollow is a town in Massachusetts that has a small population. The new Detective in the town is Abby Mills and she is working with her partner and mentor August Corbin. One night when called to a disturbance at a nearby ranch, Abby sees something that she hasn’t experienced since her childhood, a supernatural event. images This spirals a string of events culminating with the discovery of a man named Ichabod Crane. What would you do if you woke up 150 years later? This is what Ichabod Crane has to cope with as he wakes up in the modern era. While waiting in the cell, Crane overhears Abby detailing the events that happened at the ranch. Astonished by what he is hearing, Crane lends his information over to the detectives and begins to team up with Abby to track down the culprit.

What I love about this series is that it melds together different tales and takes it stage in modern day America. Crane, who is from the 1700s wakes up in a world filled with technologies that he cannot fathom. The first season really drew me in with the banter he would have with Lieutenant Mills, an African American woman in the role of an officer.

Abbie Mills:
Mr. Crane, I’m Lieutenant Abbie Mills.

Ichabod Crane:
A female lieutenant. In whose army?

Abbie Mills:
You’re not gonna break character, huh?

Ichabod Crane:
You’ve been emancipated, I take it?

Abbie Mills:
Excuse me?

Ichabod Crane:
From enslavement.

Abbie Mills:
Okay. I’ll play along here. I am a black female lieutenant for the Westchester County Police Department. Do you see this gun? I’m authorized to use it. On you.

Ichabod Crane:
If you’re insinuating I endorse slavery, I’m offended.

Abbie Mills:
Wait, back up. You’re offended?

Ichabod Crane:
I’ll have you know I was a proponent of the Abolitionist Act before the New York Assembly.

Abbie Mills:
Congratulations. Slavery has been abolished 150 years. It’s a whole new day in America.

I also love watching the growing relationships between the characters in the show. Due to the experiences each person shares, their bonds deepen and make for really good TV outside of the main story-line. I really believe that if more people gave the series a chance, they would like it. It’s witty, filled with drama, and contains pretty good action scenes. My top reasons to “Play” this series is listed below.

Play:

  • Provides a different historical retelling of some of our nation’s events.
  • Drama, Mystery, Action and Comedy are represented well throughout the series.
  • Currently on it’s 4th season so you will have plenty of episodes to keep you entertained.

Check out the Trailer here: Click Here For Sleepy Hollow Trailer.

All in all you can find the complete season on Hulu if you decide to give it a go. Have you watched Sleepy Hollow? Which shows do you watch that you think are being Overlooked? Let’s talk Hidden Treasures! Have a great week everyone!

Hidden Treasures 4: Roblox

Happy Monday Gamers and Friends! Thank you for tuning in to another weekly post for our picks on “Overlooked” games, movies and shows: Hidden Treasures. Feel free to look at the last 3 posts by clicking the corresponding titles: Allegiant, Nerve, iZombie! This week we are highlighting a free game on PC and Xbox One; Roblox!  Sit back, relax and see why I love this game and why you should be playing it too!

Roblox is a a type of MMORPG SandBox game that consists of several online multiplayer games to play. So this is where it gets interesting as Roblox is similar in functionality to Minecraft where players in the community are able to create maps and game modes. It’s an awesome way to pass the time and with the unlimited uploads from the community you can literally play a different game each day. Below I have listed some of my favorite game modes with a short description of what to expect.

Game Types: Paintball, Dodgeball, Tycoons, Races, theme parks,   obstacle courses,

  • Tycoons- There’s a type of game called  Tycoon that’s super awesome because you build like a factory in order to make money and buy different upgrades, items, supplies etc.

What makes this game fun for me is there are so many different tycoon games  so you receive a different experience each time. The Mario Tycoon is awesome because one of the items you can buy are suits for Mario, Yoshi, Peach, etc. You can walk around as the characters with weapons you buy in order to demolish opponents.

  • Obstacle Courses- There’s a plethora of obstacle course that you can played commonly known as “Obby’s.”

A different version of the obstacle courses are called Escape The … Fill in the blank here. Escape the Dentist office, Escape the Construction Zone, etc. The escape versions of the obstacle courses are hilarious because you are jumping over and going through obstacles that are themed to the course.

  • Dodgeball- Dodgeball is pretty self explanatory, you are placed on either the red or blue team randomly and basically you throw balls to eliminate players on the other team. I believe you have 3 lives and each time you are hit your character turns a different color. This change is visible to all players which can make you a target if you are 1 hit away from elimination.
  • Social Games – There’s a ton of social meeting games like theme parks where you can ride attractions, talk to people, play carnival games and hangouts such as dance parties, prom and even a pool! If you just want to relax, show off your newest clothes or watch others you can do so.  There’s even Hide N Seek!

There’s plenty more game types like shooters, RPG’s and races available on the Roblox servers.

Customization: Another great feature of Roblox is that you are able to fully customize your characters. You can win coins to upgrade your appearance. The customization feature of the game is endless.

Play:

  • You love to have a variety of games to play
  • You enjoy playing a stress free game with fun and lots of colors lol
  • You enjoy Sandbox games with multiple customization features

Skip:

  • You are not a fan of the kiddie, Lego type graphics of the game
  • You do not like playing Minecraft or other sandbox games
  • You’d rather have structure than a melting pot of different game types

Thank you for reading and try out Roblox in your spare time! Have you ever played Roblox? What games do you love that you think are overlooked? Let’s talk Hidden Treasures!

Hidden Treasures 3: Allegiant!

Hiya Gamers, Geeks & Friends! Welcome to week 3 of the Hidden Treasures weekly post (click here to view Hidden Treasure 1: iZombie or here for Hidden Treasures 2: Nerve ). To familiarize you with the post, each Monday I will talk about an item that I believe is “Overlooked” and should have the attention of more people. This section can range from Video Games to Movies or Series. There overview done, now let’s get to this week’s topic the “Allegiant” movie. Before you decide to stop reading, hear me out on this movie and why I think that more people should give it a chance. I have read the Divergent, Insurgent and Allegiant books by Veronica Roth. I was very excited when the films were being released and Divergent was one of my first film reviews (maybe I’ll post that review one day). This was the first time that I had read the book first and then watched the movie.

Allegiant is the 3rd movie in the Divergent Series (both the film and books). Divergent is the story of Tris and others who are raised in the post dystopian city of Chicago. The world as we know it is in ruin and the city of Chicago built up walls and a fence to guard against anything negative beyond the wall (sounds like Game of Thrones doesn’t it :-p). To keep the city and people under control they are divided into 5 factions in which the personalities of each individual will be utilized to further the succession of the city. divergent These factions are Candor ( The Honest), Abnegation (The Selfless), Erudite (The Intelligent), Dauntless (The Brave) and Amity (The Peaceful). Each one of these factions controlled an essential part of Chicago and allowed for the city to grow and prosper. The Candor controlled the courts, Abnegation ruled the government, Erudite were the Doctors and Scientists, Dauntless were the protectors and Amity were the farmers. Everyone co existed together harmoniously. So how were people placed in the factions you may ask? Well the teens had to take an aptitude test. The aptitude test that each citizen took as a teenager placed them in their correct faction in which they would live out their lives. This meant that some families would be broken up and the teens would go to live with their new “families.”

There were citizens who received test results placing them in more than 1 faction. This was considered being a Divergent as you did not fit into 1 category. Divergents are considered abominations and are sought out and disposed of. That’s the premise of the series. Now lets fast forward to the 3rd film Allegiant. Allegiant is the story of Tris and friends leaving their long time home in Chicago and heading out to see if there’s life beyond the wall. For 200 years they thought Chicago was the last surviving city and now they’re going to find a world beyond their comprehension. the_divergent_series_allegiant_hd_screencaps-21 The journey will even finally reveal what being “Divergent” really means. How would you feel if everything you have ever known and believed was turned upside down? What would you do?

Allegiant is the 3rd film and did not get as many ratings as the 1st and 2nd films. I believe that the decline in attendance was caused by the 2nd film Insurgent. Insurgent had a pretty good turn out in theaters, however the movie didn’t follow the books as much as Divergent did. A few of the concepts were a little weird and they made the movie in 3D which didn’t help out with the story line. Allegiant actually stayed pretty true to the book. In my opinion it was very well portrayed, the action aligned well throughout the story and you are able to see the connections within each individual character (I’m being pretty vague here as I don’t want to spoil anything in case you decide to watch 🙂 ). The movie has action, mystery and a bit of romance.

All in all, watch the trailer and think about watching Allegiant! Do you really need to watch Insurgent and Divergent first? I would recommend watching Divergent for sure. Insurgent, even though it wasn’t as good you can still watch for more back story, however, as I have stated it veered away from the book so I don’t really think it is needed to be able to enjoy Allegiant. Take a look at the trailer below and then make your choice.

Allegiant Trailer

Thank you for tuning in to this week’s Hidden Treasures! What movies do you really enjoy but many people have not seen? Have you seen Allegiant? If so, what did you think about it compared to Divergent and Insurgent? Let’s talk Movies!

“I don’t want to be just one thing. I can’t be. I want to be brave, and I want to be selfless, intelligent, and honest and kind. Well, I’m still working on kind.” -Four. This quote is from Divergent I know, but it still relates to Allegiant.

Hidden Treasures 2: Nerve

Hiya readers and friends! This week’s installment of Hidden Treasures will touch on a movie that I rarely hear anything about; Nerve. Just a quick recap, the Hidden Treasures post will go over a movie, show or video game that I believe more people should be watching. Every Monday I will highlight this “Hidden Treasure” and open up the floor for discussion or recommendations. Let’s jump into the movie!

Nerve is the story of an over achiever named Vee . nerve-pic1 The story takes place during Vee’s senior year of high school when she is debating on going to college close to home or going out on a limb and going to an art school across the country. Vee is the normal protagonist character who does whatever she is told and never commits to anything outside of her comfort zone. One day her best friend tells her to live a little and sign up for a virtual truth or dare game called Nerve. Vee was originally going to sign up as a “Watcher” who pays to watch the “Players” perform outrageous dares. The incentive for the “Players” in performing the user suggested dares is simple, they receive money for each dare completed.

The movie takes a turn when Vee gets upset and switches her status to Player mode. This is where the action picks up as the timid Vee begins to peel out of her comfort zone and perform for the watchers.  nerve2-opt She is also paired up with a partner for most of her dares courtesy of the “watchers” whose name is Ian. Ian does his best to continue pushing Vee to perform the dares as his completion becomes dependent on her.The dares grow significantly harder and turns this high school drama into an all out thriller movie.

I think that Nerve is a pretty good movie to watch because it shifts from a cheesy High School movie to an entertaining series of events. Yes, most of the scenes will be predictable but its a new concept on a classic Truth or Dare game. I can say that the ending scenes did catch me by surprise. Stop by Redbox and check out Nerve, this week’s pick for an overlooked movie. The question is are you going to be a Watcher or Player?

I triple, dog dare you! 😉

Hidden Treasures 1: iZombie

Hiya! Gamers and Friends.

Have you ever discovered something, a show, video game or book that was so awesome and you found yourself asking “Why are more people not into this?” As I scroll through reviews and blogs I have noticed that it is a trending theme and I am ready to bring those underground treasures to the forefront! Each week I will submit a post about a “Hidden Treasure” that in my opinion has been overlooked and should be receiving more popularity. This week I will present my case for a pretty cool spin on a zombie show; iZombie. So here me out on this and don’t worry, no spoilers!

iZombie is a series, loosely based on a comic, about a woman named Liv. Simple enough right? You’re typical Jane Doe. Liv is completing her residency at a hospital and is well on the road to becoming a doctor(Insert compliments here, beautiful, intelligent and living a perfect life). One night (the pilot episode of course) things take a turn and Liv is turned into a zombie. Now let’s take a guess at the preferred cuisine of a Zombie? You’re guessed it, Brains! Liv has to feed in order to survive so she alters her career path and starts working at a place where she can satisfy her appetite and not be found out; a Morgue! Working here Liv is able to safely sustain herself by feeding on the brains of murder victims. This is where things become even more intriguing with this series as a new perspective on zombies will be introduced. Liv begins to inherit attributes as well as memories of the murder victims for a period of time

600x600bb-85.

Did I grab your attention yet? Well now you will have to watch the series to know more and see what happens next!

The story line and acting in my opinion is top notch and more people should be watching! Yet I know less than a handful of people who have even dared to watch episode 1. I’m very impressed with this new twist on zombies and I love a great mystery series. Don’t worry there’s plenty of action and the story will follow more than Liv’s secret. iZombie’s first 2 seasons can be found on Netflix.

If you are watching or have watched iZombie, what are your thoughts? Also, what are some “Hidden Treasures” that you know of and want to tell people about? Feel free to leave a comment below.

Hold on to Your Heads!
