I did it! I’ve completed the NaNoWriMo challenged and wrote a novel in 30 days (really 29 days because I finished a day early!). It was really hard and as you can see from the numbers, I slowed down towards the end (Thanksgiving played a large role in the decline), but in the end, I’ve pushed through the days of laziness and the days where I’ve felt like i couldn’t write anything and it has paid off tremendously. Thank you to everyone who was rooting for me and everyone prticipating in the challenge.

With the other updates I have included an excerpt from the story, so I will include one final snippet from the book titled: A Dance With Destiny!

Blurb: A kingdom in turmoil, an heiress’ position being challenged, a forced betrothal. Can Princess Ariana carry on the family dynasty of the House of Tamlin with a 16 year old secret looking to take everything away? Told through the eyes of household characters, a journal floats around the land. How will she cope? Will she survive? And will she ascend as the ruler of the kingdom? It is truly a dance with destiny!

The first time that I realized that I could rule was when the Dauphin of France studied at the same library as I. I was away from court for 8 months at this time and my scholars had me studying the philosophies of Galileo. The Dauphin, Francois was announced and he walked through with the arrogance of a king in waiting. Francois was 4 years older than me and ordered everyone around as if he were already ruling the country. I took it upon myself to test all of the skills I have learned over the years through observation and awareness. I introduced myself to the Dauphin and with the flirtatious techniques learned with my mother, I posed intelligent questions that I knew a prince would know the answer to. After flaunting my brilliance and catering to the Dauphin’s ego, I started making suggestions as to how the library could improve its processes. The Dauphin was so impressed that he began to think the ideas were his and after a week, the changes were made. I knew then I had a talent for ruling and a talent for persuasion and the Dauphin set me on a path, that I could not return from.

You may be wondering, why I think that I can be a better ruler. On all of my campaigns, I had to travel through cities that were forgotten. There’s been crime, murder and a disregard for the monarchy. If we are anointed by God, why does so many of our people despise us? It’s because of greed and envy. They want us to treat them as equals when they have not worked for it. Their allegiances are wavering to whomever benefits them at the time and they do not know true loyalty or respect. One of the philosophers that I have been reading says that the only way to truly rule is through fear. Being loved and respected is great, but love is fickle and waivers to the person that is providing the most benefits at the time. I aim to have both. To the outside world I will be loved, the only surviving heir. But behind the scenes, I will have my mercenaries bring law and order through an iron fist and a merciless rule.

This is not the final chapter for me or my work. I am L, I am the only person that can truly bring greatness to our country. Not by kindness and the education of our people, but by ruling with an iron fist. Fear is the only option for a people so proud and entitled. Until I am old enough, I must play the part of the hand that I was dealt. But my supporters are lying in wait for me to rally the nobles and commoners to my side. I will take the throne, even if I have to take it by force.

–       L

What I’ve learned?

LP_hero

Since this was my first experience with NaNoWriMo and actually completing a story, I’ve picked up some great tips that I want to share.

  • Plan in advance – Creating an outline before you take on a writing task is highly recommended. I am a pantser and I can sit and write quickly once I have an idea, but sometimes I lose my way. That’s where the outline comes in handy! On days that I did not feel inspired to write, I read through my outline and it helped me gather my thoughts so that I could write through the writer’s block!
  • Just Keep Writing – My co-worker Mrs. Michelle is a writer and she has been invaluable through this experience. Any time I have a doubt or I start to freak out because of the pressure, she would give me sound advice. The best thing she told me throughout the process was “Just Keep Writing! Right now you are just shoveling sand in the sandbox. During the editing process you will create the castle.” I don’t know why that saying stuck with me but It did and the analogy helped me succeed.
  • Define Your Characters – So I had a very basic outline that did not have enough information in it, especially relating to my characters. This made it difficult and I had to use standard names until I found better ones to use. Thank God there is a Ctrl + F shortcode that allows you to find and replace words. It saved me in the end. Next time, I will define my characters, their traits and motives before writing.
  • In the end, everything will tie together – I was worried that my story wouldn’t make sense when I was getting to the end. Again, I was saved by my literary Angel Mrs. Michelle, she told me to trust in the system. She said that I would be surprised how everything ties itself together in the end and she was right! I knew somewhat about the ending, but i didn’t know where the gaps would fill in and with which characters, in the end everything seemed to naturally fit together with my outline of What if statements.

I’ve had an excellent experience with NaNoWriMo and I will definitely participate again next year. Now that I have tackled this mountain of a challenge, I will be back to writing full time on the blog starting Monday (a short writing break to recharge lol ). Have you participated in this challenge and what was your progress? Are you currently working on any projects? Let’s talk creative writing!

NaNoWriMo Update & Excerpt #2

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Yes, we are a day early but still, it’s a festive time of year. Today will be another update and excerpt from my first attempt at the NaNoWriMo challenge. To be honest, I feel really good and I know that I can make the goal (as long as I am not comatose from the meal tomorrow). Thank you for hanging with us! Writing is going pretty well at the moment. With all of my updates, I will include an excerpt from the story. This time we are introduced to a new character in the mix, Roheysia.

My Chambers, February 4th, 1524.

So this is where all of the royal secrets are being kept. I have to admit, I thought there would be a little more spice in a royal journal. No matter. My name is Roheysia Thorngold and  I am the head lady in waiting to our soon to be queen, Princess Ariana. Ari and I have been friends since we were 5, we’re 15 now. She’s such a great person and I have no doubt in my mind that she will usher in a new Golden Age for our kingdom. She has always been the loyal daughter in the eye of the court, but behind the doors of her personal court, there’s an entirely different game being played. I was 12 when I learned how to kiss. Ari and I would watch the queen’s ladies make their rounds at court. We figured they were gathering information because they were only being courted by court officials, high ranking nobles and diplomats.

Ari and I followed one of the most beautiful ladies I had ever seen. Her name was Ysmay. Her hair was auburn and her skin was as smooth as cocoa. Her hips were curved and her lips were lush. We would follow her and mimic her movements when we were alone. Ari has always been fascinated with women and the art of love. During feasts and gatherings we would watch the different dance styles from over the world shuffle into our court and across our tiled floors. Ari has always been fascinated with dance so she would ask questions to all of the musicians playing their foreign music.

You are probably wondering how I got my hands on the journal. I picked up a few tips from Ysmay and wanted to gather some information on my mistresses fiance. So I flirted with him and his advisor Sterling. Sterling always had a disapproving look at me and the prince when I would drop by to lighten his load. There was a lingering stare that Sterling would give me that gave me the idea of seducing him as well. When the prince and Sterling returned from their campaign in Mythonia, his grace sent for me to accompany him after his travel. I showed up in the finest silks that I could fine. The seamstress detailed the gown to accentuate my bust and peach shaped bottom. The gown was so tight that I felt as if I had nothing on at all. I followed the prince to his chamber that was connected to Sterling’s office and as the door shut I peered over my shoulder to see the advisor still admiring my assets.

After my visit with the prince, Sterling was staring at my bust and I noticed that he had this journal hidden underneath the papers on his desk. I engaged him in frivolous conversation and using the techniques that I had learned, enticed him to walk me back to my room. I planted a kiss on his cheek and he invited me to a picnic the next afternoon. My charms have never failed me, the nervous Sterling cleared his throat and walked off. Before the picnic the next day, I went back into the study and grabbed the journal. My Lord Sterling was predictably heading to the kitchen, I’m assuming he was checking on the dishes that he had prepared for our picnic. And now we are here!

Anyway, the journal entries from Lord Gabriel and Sterling are from outsiders looking in. I’m here to tell you the behind the scenes action only someone close to the princess would know. Great, Prince Adrian has called us all to the hall for an announcement. I will update the journal soon.

-Roheysia

Have a great weekend! What are you currently working on? Any plans for the holiday? Let’s talk!

You Should Try…Arrow!

Power up players and novas! I hope November is going really well for everyone. So NaNoWriMo is going really well and currently I am expected to finish the novel by November 28th, 2017 if I stay on the course that I am currently writing. I can already feel the pressure as my mind is circling thoughts of “Is this story good? Will anyone like it? What if this is for nothing? Etc.” I’ve been pushing those thoughts out of my mind and powering through although I have many doubts. Personally, I think the process of pushing through and completing your goals, no matter the results is the best part of this writing challenge. On to the topic of today’s post. We’ve all had friends, co-workers, family and acquaintances telling us that we should try watching a show or playing a game. I’ve been more open to playing games that I initially have no interest in and trying out shows that have been recommended to me over the years. This segment will probably go out every 2 weeks, detailing the activity that I have tried.

This week I will be talking about a series that was recommended. This show has been recommended to me a few times over the years. I finally listened to my friend Xsanie when I was on vacation last month. The topic: You Should Try… Watching Arrow!

ARROW-logo

Arrow is the show following DC Comics character, Oliver Queen. Similar to Bruce Wayne, Oliver was a privileged kid who grew up in Starling City. The Queen’s own a large company and contribute to Starling city as one of the “It” social families. Oliver was reckless, he was selfish and he was “The Male Lindsey Lohan.” How could this billionaire bad boy turn into a vigilante against crime? A new death experience of course!

My initial bias of Arrow – We know that Netflix and the media have been revamping comics and superhero movies for a few years now. I initially confused Arrow with the Green Lantern and had no interest in watching another jaded superhero battle his demons and criminals.

After Episode 1 – After watching the pilot episode of Arrow I noticed that there was a pretty good underlying story. I found myself not much interested in the vigilante fighting crime, but in the flashbacks to see exactly why Oliver became the Arrow. This curiosity fueled my need to binge watch the first season of the show. Each episode a problem was presented, it was solved and a new question emerged. Great way to get someone hooked!

Honor Thy Father

After Season 1 – I’m invested in Arrow now. I will continue watching even though there are a few things that annoy me about the show. Look out for the season 1 preview of Arrow next week.

next

Final Thoughts: Arrow is a great show and I can see it’s appeal. You do not have to have knowledge of the comic to enjoy the show. I really enjoyed that all of the questions presented in the series, were answered before the end of the season. I was pretty annoyed with Laurel’s character. Her facial expressions were exactly the same whether she was angry, confused, happy etc. I also didn’t like her character and what she would think about situations. Then again, I’m more of a villain person anyway.

Have you watched Arrow? What shows have you been recommended to watch? Let’s talk!

NaNoWrimo Update & Excerpt #2!

Happy Sunday Novas! Our good friend IgnitedMoth posted an update from the NaNoWriMo challenge for her first week. Check out her progress and say hi! Since the posts have been less this week due to my focus on writing, I’ve decided to follow suit and post my progress so far. Below you will find my word count for each day of the challenge so far!

November 1st – 1788

November 2nd – 2846

November 3rd – 1393

November 4th – 2194

November 5th –2107

November 6th – 2446

November 7th – 182

November 8th – 1766

November 9th – 1453

November 10th – 2457

November 11th – 1255

Total Count 19986 (includes 99 words left over from last night).

I’m really proud that I have been making so much progress on the novel. I’m trying to stay motivated and dedicated as this will be the first novel that I have completed if I meet my goal. This post will include another excerpt from the novel. If you would like to read my first excerpt, please click here!

La Roja City, Mythonia  April 15th, 1523

“I am sorry to have to bring you this news Adrian, but you are now the head of the House of Star.”

The crown of his father was too heavy for the young prince and the burden of a country now lay at his feet. Adrian was a rambunctious boy who lived life as he saw fit. The day I had to tell him that he and his little sister Princess Lara were the last 2 remaining heirs of House Star, was the saddest day of my life. I could see his joy and happiness slipping away, but immediately I had to make sure that he was aware of the magnitude of this honor and on how quickly we had to move to install him as ruler.   son_of_morzan_by_murtagh231-d4by9kl

There’s no time for Adrian to grieve. His uncle is starting a petition throughout Mythonia to be installed himself, as king. It’s no secret that his uncle Bastion has been an envious brother to the deceased king. It’s no surprise that Bastion is reaching for the throne before the king’s body’s even cold yet. We have to make sure that the council and kingdom views Adrian as the heir apparent and a strong leader to place on the throne.

I have convinced the council to hold off on the coronation of Adrian until he has found a suitable bride and married her. We need a strong marriage and hope for an heir to really solidify Adrian’s position. My prince is very “Fluent” in the language of love. His courtly love games and flirtations are known throughout the kingdom and it has damaged his image as he is now expected to turn into a respectable citizen and ruler. We have to get him married quickly and before anyone realizes that there is another candidate in contention for the throne.

I’ve received numerous messages from kingdoms offering up their princesses to Adrian. He is handsome, rugged and has a zest for life so I’m in no way concerned about the suitors not being attracted and faithful. But we need supporters. We need a country that brings wealth, a strong lineage and a great reputation to bring validity to Adrian’s rule. When I received a letter saying that the Princess Ariana of Tamlonia had come of age, I knew that we had a perfect match. Tamlonia and the House of Tamlin is one of prestige and respect. Their trade routes are some of the most lucrative and the princess is the most eligible bride on the market. I contacted the ambassadors of Tamlonia and proposed the betrothal of Adrian and Ariana. 2 Young, beautiful rulers that will most definitely create heirs and unite the 2 kingdoms.

Sterling, Prince Adrian’s Advisor

What do you think so far? I’m really proud of my work and I know that the editing process will be the hardest part, but I’m optimistic! Are you currently tackling the NaNoWriMo challenge? If so, how’s it going? Are you currently working on any projects? Let’s talk writing!

Poetry: Rejection

Rejection

My body is a temple
And yes you may stare
But don’t come up to me
like you have some kind
Of speech prepared
I’m not your baby
Or your honey bun
I’m simply delicious
And no, you can’t have some
You don’t please my eye
Or give me the tingles
I’m pretty sure your one liners
Is the reason why you’re single
I’m not you’re sweet Thang
Or something you can eat
So stop eyeing me down
Like I’m a rare piece of meat
My body isn’t your wonderland
for you to explore
I’m an exotic foreign country
Not a second class whore
I won’t give you my number
Or snapchat name
I’ve heard this all before
You are all the same
My eyes are up here
But you’re looking at my chest
Last time I checked
That’s not a sign of respect
You say that you’re different
And not like the rest,
That you’re number one
To simply to put it
“The best”
I regret to inform
That you are highly mistaken
So you’re going home tonight
To a bed that is vacant.
I won’t regret this decision
And I wont keep you in mind
But If you like, take a number
Join the other guys in line
Who think I’m a bitch
Or a stuck up chick
But darling pipe down
You’re just another dick
I’m not that type of girl
Who randomly fucks
If you like go down the street
They’ll always suck
I know my worth
And what i deserve
I don’t have time
For a creepy, ass-perve
I have a man who loves me
and treats me the right way
So why would I bother
And give you the time of day
Hes perfect and handsome
A real bread winner
So ill deny you again
You can’t take me out to dinner
I’m just not that into you
Or however it goes
You’re going to be leaving
As a one man show
You should probably go
Cause No means no
Sorry not Sorry
I think you learned your lesson though.

NaNoWriMo Update & Excerpt!

Happy Saturday Novas! Today is day number 4 in the NaNoWriMo challenge and I am ahead of schedule in word count. I’m trying to keep up with my schedule and write everydayuntil I have nothing left to write. This way, if I miss a day or have writer’s block and can’t hit the target word count, I would have built up a safety net. A while back I posted about possibly sharing some clips from the story that I am writing and you guys were great in saying that you would love to read an excerpt. Well today will be the first day that I let anyone have a peak at the story. I hope you enjoy!

My Novel: A Dance With Destiny

Genre: Young Adult / Fiction / Period Drama

Blurb: A kingdom in turmoil, an heiress’ position being challenged, a forced betrothal. Can Princess Ariana carry on the family dynasty of the House of Tamlin with a 16 year old secret looking to take everything away? Told through the eyes of household characters, a journal floats around the land. How will she cope? Will she survive? And will she ascend as the ruler of the kingdom? It is truly a dance with destiny!

Fort Canon August 5th, 1523

We were ambushed, but we finally have time to rest. Lexington is lost and the nobles are searching for us to finish the job. The battle was lost, we didn’t stand a chance but I have the king with me. He’s bloody, but he’s alive and we have to get him to safety. The extraction unit is myself and 3 of the king’s knights who were not slaughtered at the feast. There were 12 of us 2 days ago, but the combination of the cold and lack of supplies has cut through our party like the plague. Julius, the youngest of the guards is a mere 14 years old, yet he has the gall of a man. He found this abandoned fort when I asked him to scout ahead. We have to rest because the king is unwell. His wounds are deep and he has lost a lot of blood. We can’t move him too far at a time. I cleaned the wound where the spear was launched from the crowd through his gut. The good thing about the mountains is that you can get water from melting the snow.

I didn’t think he was going to make it. After the attack I sliced the long end of the spear and carried his grace out. Lucky for me, Angelina had told me a story about a rendezvous that she used to have. She would use the servants entrance through the kitchen to get to the hall in Bancroft Manor. The servants entrance was littered with secret passages so I chose one and it lead us out behind the pig pen. Had I not known about this passage, I don’t know if any of us would still be alive. period This fort contains a few pieces of iron so I had a fire built to keep his grace warm. Plunging the iron bar that I have found into the fire, I cauterized the wound that is taking the life of my king. I cannot let him die, but if we do not find refuge soon, his grace will not make it. Julius caught 2 squirrels and we fed the king and allowed him to sleep. Now I stand watch and plot our next move. The problem is, that I do not know which cities are still loyal to us. Lexington has been loyal to the Tamlin Family rule for centuries, so if they’re turned, who knows who we can trust. I have a map of our surroundings so I know that Tarringdale and Santa Lucille are pretty close to us. I guess I’m going to have to pick one and hope to God that they have not turned against the crown.

There’s a snippet of the story. What do you think? Are you working on any projects or stories right now? Let’s talk!

Bloggers Thoughts: Going from Players to Professionals!

Hiya Players and Novas! Today’s post will be a discussion post on the recent changes that I have been making on the blog. I really enjoy blogging, point blank. I am very social in real life so blogging and being social online is something that naturally appeals to me. I have met so many wonderful bloggers, gamers and downright awesome people so I want to keep on chugging! Recently I have added a few more bloggers to GamersUnitedGG so that we can increase the range of posts and diversity on the blog. The newest blogger to join us is Dale & his posts will show up as BTDPress! Check out his first post on The Psychology of Gaming here! Welcome to the team Dale!

Upgrades:

I’ve been making some changes and upgrades to gain more exposure for the blog. We have a few social media outlets in which you can stop by and read/interact with the posts. My goal is to have a fully functioning blog that represents the gaming and geek culture. With that said I am branching out and trying to change a few minor things on the blog.

  1. The First Impression & Game Review Posts – will now have a ranking at the end of the post. This will appear directly below the Play/Skip sections. I saw a great option for Hearts on the DoubleJump blog that I may use.
  2. Dedication – I’m going to strive to have at least 1 First Impressions or full Game Review every 2 weeks. (I want to have one weekly but I figured I should start slow first lol)
  3. Patreon – I have been seeing a few of my blogging buddies have started using Patreon to help fund their efforts in blogging. I am setting up a Patreon account and it will go live soon for anyone interested in helping support our efforts.
  4. Activities – I am trying to be more active with the blogging community as a whole (Twitter, Tumblr, etc). The minor problem is that my job has now thrown off my work/blog balance (which is why I haven’t posted in 2 days) so I need to come up with another way to stabilize.

Current Projects:

  1. Halloween Challenge/ Guest Blog Posts – The Guest Blog Post for this week is Zombie Survival. There’s still time to enter your 500 words or less response to How will you survive. Enter and link your post on the original post for use to read!
  2. Game Review – I found a gaming company that wanted bloggers to review their mobile game. This will be our first request to review a game post so I’m making sure that I am thoroughly playing the game.
  3. October’s Question of the Month- Read our Question of the Month post on the video game mercenary that we would hire and then check out our blogging buddies responses! You can vote for your favorite over at Later Levels by clicking here! Their post goes up October 16th!
  4. NaNoWriMo – I am planning to participate in the National November Writer’s Month Challenge where you would write 50,000 words on a novel. This is my first undertaking of the challenge and I want to do well so I am outlining the story that I would like to work on.
  5. Collaborations – I love collaborating with other bloggers. I am looking to do more collaboration posts. If you would like to collaborate email us or comment below!
  6. Book Review The King’s Curse- so I started reading the Kings Curse again and it got realllll interesting. I’m about a 3rd of the way through so I look to finish the book and the review by the end of the month.

That’s what we’re working on so far. What are you currently working on? What are your plans? Are you making any upgrades or changes to your blog or blogging process? How are you going from Player to Professional? Let’s talk blogging!

Have a great week!
